The UK Permanent Representation to the EU (UKRep) works within the EU and its member states to maximise British influence on issues such as trade, the single market and economic growth and is now looking for a highly motivated Policy Officer to work in the Political Section on a range of high priority issues.

The successful applicant will lead on a range of political, staffing and corporate issues, giving them a wide ranging insight into UK policy formulation, our human resource strategy, and the internal workings of one of the UK’s biggest and most high profile diplomatic missions.

It is a challenging job at the heart of the UK Representation so the successful applicant will need to prove that they have good judgement, a solid track record in delivering results and that they are, above all, a genuine team player. A solid understanding of the EU Institutions will be essential and previous policy experience would be an asset.

Main responsibilities will include:

  • EU Institutions policy: Desk-level lead for Inter-institutional relations, working with the First Secretary Political, the Legal Team and others in UKRep, as well as contacts across the Institutions and other PermReps, to inform and advise the policy makers in London, and build support for UK positions and ideas. He or she will need to be able to work across the full range of Inter-Institutional issues, but can expect to have a particular focus on the Council and the European Council.

  • Ongoing EU business: Co-ordination with London on the management of ongoing business, including preparing briefs for regular planning meetings between Whitehall and UKREP and identifying and advising on cross cutting issues. Co-ordination role on UKREP’s Gibraltar business, maintaining effective working relations with the Government of Gibraltar’s Brussels office and producing briefings/speaking notes for Permanent Representative on Gibraltar-related issues.

  •  UK Parliament: Oversight of visiting UK Parliamentary committees, including preparing briefings and advising on programmes. Keeping Senior Management team aware of key developments in the UK Parliament related to EU business, and leading on correspondence between UKREP and Parliament, working closely with the National Parliament Representatives in Brussels and Parliamentary teams in the FCO and DExEU.

  • Corporate: The jobholder will assist the Senior Management team on internal corporate processes and projects and helping to deliver UKRep's internal communications strategy.

  • Knowledge of the EU Institutions and the EU legislative process.
  • Experience of working in a policy field.
  • Line management experience, or the ability to develop quickly strong line management skills.
  • Native level English ability (spoken and written);
  • Education to university level;
  • IT literacy (particularly MS Office tools);
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of French language.

This is a full-time contract for 5 working days (36.25 hours net) per week. This position will be filled on a "replacement contract" to cover a leave of absence. It is anticipated that the staff member will return late Summer 2018. This is only a guide and any possible earlier return or extension to this date would be discussed with the successful candidate.

The monthly gross salary for this position is € 4,747.11 C4 (L) level (The British Diplomatic Missions in Belgium salaries are not subject to annual indexation).

Please note that Belgian nationals will be paid their salary gross and are expected to comply with their tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the Belgian authorities. Non-Belgian nationals will receive their salary net, minus the deduction of an equivalent level of Belgian tax retained at source. Further information on this will be given to candidates during the recruitment process.

The successful candidates will be subject to professional background checks and security clearance.
