Main purpose of job:

The British Embassy is looking for a Financial Services specialist. The post holder will be a key member of the Economic and Finance team responsible for promoting and developing partnerships in support of our diplomatic objectives at a particularly key period of time. 

The job holder will be required to provide analysis of financial services sector in Japan, engaging with financial services sector and leading the coordination of Embassy financial services related events by working closely with different teams across the Embassy. In addition, they will be required to provide clear messages to the financial services sector on the impact of the EU Exit on financial services interactions between the UK and Japan and to drive forward a positive relationship between the UK and Japan in financial services over the EU Exit period.

In addition to working on this key portfolio, the successful candidate with gain valuable working knowledge of various team with the Embassy. The position provides plenty of variety and the post holder will need to be involved in a range of activities across the Embassy, including developing programmes for visiting ministers and senior officials, hosting and attending events, participating in and delivering training.

The purpose of the British Embassy in Tokyo is to promote the UK Government’s prosperity, security and consular interests in Japan. The Economic and Finance Team, within which this role sits, is responsible for delivering the UK Government’s economic and financial policy objectives in Japan. Since the UK’s decision to leave the European Union, the team has played a central role in addressing the challenges and promoting the opportunities created by the decision.  We provide input to UK government policy making through research, analysis, reporting and building strong relationships across the financial services sector in Japan.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve:

Financial Services Specialist 

  •  Supporting the co-ordination of financial services work across the Embassy, building on your knowledge of the financial services sector you will co-ordinate work to ensure a streamlined and joined up approach to the financial services sector is taken across the Embassy.
  •  Take the lead on organising financial services related events and visits, leading all stage of the event planning cycle, working with internal and external partners and supplies to deliver successful, timely and budgeted events. Lead on the administration for the Future of Financial Services Week as part of UK in Japan 2019-2020 Great Campaign. 
  • Lead on analysis of financial services sector market access issues, including the ownership of updating market access database. Provide briefings and background information on financial services related topics for meetings and visitors.
  • Work with the Business Engagement Advisor on financial services related business engagement and analysis, developing key relationships across the financial service sector businesses and advocacy groups to improve business environment and market access.
  •  Carry out other corporate and team responsibilities as required.

The British Embassy, British Consulate-General and UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office provide a range of training opportunities in core diplomatic and commercial skills, from networking and communication to project management. The British network in Japan works closely with Embassies across the Asia-Pacific region to share experience and learning. Opportunity to travel within Japan and possibly the region. Working across a range of teams gives the opportunity for insight into trade and investment promotion, market access, trade policy, science & innovation and many other areas.

Alongside a number of Embassy-specific courses that will need to be completed on arrival, the Embassy is supportive of learning and development. We offer five development days per year, and regular opportunities for learning and development delivered both within the mission and regionally in Asia. We also focus on using coaching and a buddying system to support new arrivals.

  • Business English (IELTS band 7 or TOEIC 800 points or above or equivalent)
  • Fluent Japanese language skills (JLPT level 1 or equivalent)
  • Experience of working in the financial services sector
  • Experience of event management
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Ability to be creative, look for innovative solutions or partnerships and constructively challenge traditional approaches
  • IT skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build strong working relationships quickly
  • Experience of working in an international environment
