Public Diplomacy

Main purpose of job:

Act as project manager for UK government’s public diplomacy events around Rugby World Cup and Tokyo 2020.  Work with stakeholders across the Japan network and departments and agencies in London, to develop and deliver a plan for a ‘British House’ or other public diplomacy events through the major sports event in 2019 and 2020.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

Develop plan - The jobholder will need to work with DIT World Events team in London to develop a plan for HMG activation during the sporting events in 2019 and 2020.  This will include working with HMG and HMG-related stakeholders to plan content in line with country business plan objectives and wider global objectives.  The job holder will need to work closely with the British Council to  ensure that plans fit with the British Council’s planned season of culture 2019-20.

The jobholder will lead on developing bids for GREAT Funding, other HMG funding and any plans for sponsorship of the events, working with DIT World Events sponsorship team.  They will also lead for post on inputting into ministerial decisions on the events.

The jobholder will lead on delivery of the activation, working closely with DIT World Events team, the event management company and stakeholders including the British Olympic Association and British Paralympic Association.  Their responsibility will be to ensure that the events meet post and wider HMG objectives, with targeted content, scheduled appropriately to make the most of VIP visits, athletes and the right guest lists.

  • Experience of raising sponsorship.
  • Resilience to work under pressure over an extended period.
  • Good interpersonal and organisational skills to conduct duties effectively.
  • Flexible, dependable, enthusiastic and customer focused and enjoy taking on challenging responsibilities.
  • Level of language required: Fluent Japanese speaker with good command of English (speaking, reading and writing) or vice versa.

Alongside a number of Embassy-specific courses that will need to be completed on arrival, the Embassy is supportive of learning and development. We offer five development days per year, and regular opportunities for learning and development delivered both within the mission and regionally in Asia. We also focus on using coaching and a buddying system to support new arrivals.

Monday – Friday 9:00 – 17:30, 7.5 working hours per day

However, the nature of the working day will differ depending on the events and visits organised.
