View Vacancy - Pro Consul
The British Embassy in Rabat invites applications for the position of an Pro Consul, Grade A2(L)- Maternity Cover.
Objective:
The applicant will work as part of a three-person consular team in Rabat delivering high-quality Consular Services to British Nationals and their next of kin. The position is for 5 months only – from end June until end November 2017 – and provides cover for someone on maternity leave.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Consular Assistance (80%)
- Dealing with customers at the Embassy in Rabat and principally in the North and central parts of Morocco.
- Providing advice and assistance to British Nationals and other eligible persons (including their families), particularly those people that are considered vulnerable. This would include when someone has died; been hospitalised; or the subject of a crime, abduction, bereavement or arrest. It might involve liaison with experts in London, prisons, funeral directors, courts, lawyers and other local authorities, as well as visits to prisons and hospitals. Typically such assistance would be provided to customers located in or coming from the North and central regions of Morocco; our office in Marrakech would cover the South.
- Performing a range of notarial and other fee-bearing services, including certifying documents, witnessing signatures and issuing affidavits.
- Issuing Emergency Travel Documents and Emergency Passports in accordance with procedures.
- Administrative work, such as filing, completing consular returns and updating consular information.
- Answering enquiries by telephone, correspondence and e-mails.
- Supporting colleagues within the Morocco network in the event of a consular crisis/serious incident.
- Handling consular fees.
Crisis Planning and Response (10%)
- Assist in maintaining the Embassy’s emergency and civil contingency plans, ensuring both are tested at regular intervals and contact lists are kept up to date. In times of crisis (e.g. natural disasters, pandemics etc) provide prompt and professional assistance to British nationals caught up in the situation, including working outside of office hours and deploying to the scene of the incident where appropriate.
Partnership and Communication (10%)
- Organise and take part in activities to increase the British community’s understanding and awareness of the role of consular staff and the Embassy.

Essential:
- Customer service: proven experience in a customer facing role meeting the needs of a wide range of customer needs.
Desirable:
- Personal Resilience: Ability to work along for long periods without close supervision, and the flexibility and patience to deal with difficult situations and the ability to sometimes work unsocial hours in an emergency or crisis.
- Local knowledge: of the North and central regions of Morocco.
- Local knowledge: general knowledge of the Moroccan administrative systems, including the justice system, laws and regulations and social services.
- Travel Industry knowledge: experience or knowledge of working with travel companies or other organisations supporting tourists.
- Experience in a similar role with another Embassy, NGO or an international organisation.
- A professional background in social work and/or providing support to vulnerable people.
- Good spoken and written French and/or Moroccan Arabic.
Working Hours and Remuneration:
The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including: gross salary of MAD 13,110 per month, inclusive of all allowances.
Conditioned working hours for the position are 38 hours per week Monday to Friday.
The position is for 5 months only – from end June until end November 2017.
