The Department for International Trade (DIT) is responsible for securing UK and global prosperity by promoting international trade and investment and free trade.  

This is an exciting, high profile position within the British High Commission to manage and deliver the content of highly successful commercially related VIP visits and UK Department for International Trade (DIT) events in Delhi, and to co-ordinate visits across the India network (Deputy High Commissions in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune). 

India is a UK Government priority and one of our most important trade and investment partners. Fundamental to this growing relationship are a steady stream of visiting UK Ministers and VIPs. Well planned and executed VIP visits can help unlock doors and business deals. They can also promote UK Government goals to increase UK-India trade and investment. Your role is to make sure these visits go smoothly, maximising on the opportunity of high-level UK presence in India, reporting to the Head of Marketing and Events in India. 

Our activity usually relies heavily on face to face interactions, successful physical events, trade missions and VIP visits. The COVID-19 pandemic has refocused our efforts and increasingly your role will be to drive and deliver impactful virtual activity, ensuring effective engagement with key governmental and business stakeholders during Covid-19.

You will be responsible for managing DIT-focused ministerial and VIP visits to India; supporting our Trade and Investment   teams with events; and leading on VIP, cross-sector, and/or cross-departmental events, virtual event VIP/Ministerial activities and     projects as appropriate. 

You will join a diverse network in India that focuses on sectors including financial services, life sciences, technology, digital     and creative media, advanced engineering, defence and security, consumer goods, clean technology, renewable and infrastructure.

Due to the security clearance level required, only nationals of the following countries are eligible to apply:

The United Kingdom, EU nationals, Canada, Australia, USA and New Zealand.

Citizens of these countries must have been a resident in one of these countries for at least two of the last five years.

British citizens must also have been resident in the UK for 2 out of the previous 5 years.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

Visits and Event Management

Ministerial/VIP Visits (50%)

  • Overall project management of DIT Ministerial/VIP visits to India and accompanying business delegations, including by utilising project management tools and maintaining project plans. You will create and manage the VIP schedule and provide regular updates to relevant stakeholders.  
  • Advise on visit/event themes, content, activity and objectives; meeting potential senior partners and undertaking event ‘recces’ - advising on suitable venues, partners and event choreography for Ministerial/VIP visits/events to India.
  • Act as Whitehall’s point of contact for India during a Ministerial/VIP visit and attend visit meetings/teleconferences as required. An ability and willingness to travel is important as you may be asked to accompany Ministers during their time in India.
  • Draft and coordinate briefings.
  • You will develop close partnerships with organisations that are central to VIP visits and DIT event delivery: Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), The National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog), Confederation of British Industry, British Business Groups, UK India Business Council (UKIBC), the National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM) and the Ministry of Commerce.
  • Support wider UK trade and investment objectives by submitting proposals for VIP/Ministerial support.
  • Provide ad-hoc, non-sector support to Deputy Director and Delhi Cluster Managers.

DIT Events Delivery and Business Delegations (50%)

  • Plan, manage and deliver/oversee DIT external and internal events - from concept to completion – including sending invitations, managing registrations, event promotion, securing venues, speaker and delegate management, gathering event collateral, on-site event management, and post-event reporting.
  • You will be responsible for ensuring the smooth and effective running of events held at British High Commission venues and external locations for DIT - these include business receptions, panel discussions and internal events. Where events are hosted in partnership with other stakeholders, you will ensure that they are aware of and adhere to British High Commission guidelines on security, branding, and event set up/management.
  • Manage DIT India’s input into UK based India events e.g. investor summits, business fairs; and other ad-hoc events
  • Coordinate DIT guest lists and spreadsheets.
  • Liaise closely with DIT’s external event providers.
  • Work with the relevant teams and technology to realise VIP/Ministerial virtual event activity for India where required.
  • For business delegations, you will manage all Delhi logistics and oversee logistics in other posts - from hotel bookings to finance

Resources managed (staff and expenditure):

The jobholder will manage 1x A2 Events, Visits and Business Delegations officer. You will also manage a visits budget.  

Language requirements:

Language: English

Excellent communication skills in English with a strong attention to detail as well as the ability to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders including senior-level officials and executives.

Other skills / experience / qualifications:

Essential on arrival:  

Proven project management experience preferably gained within an event management/delivery role

Working knowledge of private enterprise

Excellent communication skills and/or Marketing and Communications experience

Strong attention to detail

Ability to collaborate effectively and work in a team, both local and virtual, toward shared goals .


An understanding of the UK’s diplomatic mission to India and of the UK Government/Westminster system is desirable.
