The British Embassy in Slovakia is part of a worldwide network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is looking for a Political Support Officer to join our team. 

The main purpose of the role is to support the political team, the Ambassador and Deputy Head of Mission on our work covering the full breadth of the UK’s relationship with Slovakia. 

You will provide support on inward and outward visits, event organisation and project delivery. You will lead on a discrete policy portfolio, likely to include education and health (although this is subject to change should priorities shift), as well as supporting the embassy’s work on Innovation. You will work closely with the Deputy Head of Mission providing personal assistant support and have the opportunity to cover absences for the Ambassador’s Executive Assistant. 

You will join an experienced and friendly team who will help you to develop expertise in your lead areas and will support you to work independently and proactively.


Roles and responsibilities:

  • Support inward and outward visits for UK ministers and officials (occasionally out of hours) and the delivery of embassy events and projects, working closely with colleagues across the team.

  • Lead on your own discrete policy portfolio (likely to include Education and Health), developing a network of contacts, analysing and reporting on developments as well as supporting embassy delivery on Science & Innovation. Support the delivery of Embassy projects and events;

  • As necessary, provide diary and other PA/EA support to HMA and DHM.

  • There will likely be opportunities to support delivery on wider UK priorities working with teams across the embassy, including on crisis response. The current jobholder played a significant role in the embassy’s work on COVID-19, COP26 and following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

  • Fluency in Slovak and fluency at C1 level in English according to CEFR Framework *.

  • University graduate;

  • An understanding of the Slovak government structure and its functions, and an interest in current affairs and international relations;

  • Team oriented approach and a proven ability to work flexibly, collaboratively and under pressure with a range of colleagues and stakeholders;

  • Willingness to undertake a variety of tasks, excellent organisational skills, self-motivated and proactive;

  • Good problem solving, critical thinking and analytical skills;

  • Good IT skills including Microsoft Office and Outlook;

This is a full-time, fixed term position for one year with the possibility of renewal and with a probation period of  3 months.

The monthly salary for this position is € 1506.75 gross, payable 13 times a year.

The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background check and security clearance.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Slovakia are subject to terms and conditions of service according to Slovak Labour Law.
