The British Embassy in Slovakia is part of a worldwide network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for an Economic Officer to join our team.

Why should you apply? 

The main purpose of the role is to provide insight, analysis and engagement on economic, climate and energy related developments in Slovakia.  You will build your knowledge across the Slovak political and economic landscape to advise UK diplomats and ministries in London on relevant developments. This will include extensive engagement across both the UK and Slovak governments as well as with analysts and business organisations. 

You will work with an experienced and friendly team who will help you develop expertise in your lead areas and support you to work independently and proactively. 

What will you be expected to achieve?

  • Undertake analysis and research in your policy areas and in support of the wider embassy team;
  • Draft written reports and provide verbal briefings on developments within your portfolio;
  • Build a network of contacts across your policy areas;
  • Coordinate inward and outward visits (occasionally out of hours) and deliver projects and events in your policy areas;
  • Identify and support delivery of wider UK priorities by working with teams across the embassy, including on crisis response. (i.e. the current jobholder played a significant role in the embassy’s work on COVID-19, COP26 and following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine).
  • Fluent in English and Slovak according to (C1 level CEFR*)
  • University graduate;
  • 2 years of work experience, ideally directly relevant to economics, climate or energy. 
  • A strong understanding of the Slovak economy, government structure and functions, and an interest in current affairs and international relations;
  • Team oriented approach and a proven ability to work flexibly, collaboratively and under pressure with a range of colleagues and stakeholders;
  • Able to analyse developments and proactively identify opportunities and provide advice on issues within your portfolio;
  • Good problem solving, critical thinking and analytical skills; 
  • Good Microsoft Officer suite skills.

This is a full-time, fixed term position for one year with the possibility of renewal and with a probation period of  3 months.

The monthly salary for this position is € 1,966.31 gross, payable 13 times a year.

The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background check and security clearance.

All applicants should have the right to live and work in Slovakia. The British Embassy does not sponsor for work permits.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Slovakia are subject to terms and conditions of service according to Slovak Labour Law.

Visa / Passport requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Slovakia and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
