Main Purpose of Job:

The UK has a thriving technology sector with many promising companies in areas such as AI, IoT and Fintech, and the highest number of high-growth companies, unicorns and VC investment in Europe. Japan is undergoing rapid digital transformation and interest from Japanese companies in partnering with overseas technology companies to solve the challenges is very strong. Our aim is to raise awareness of the UK tech sector in Japan, identify business opportunities and match UK and Japanese companies. The successful candidate will be working in the Technology Trade Team in the Department for Businesses and Trade (DBT) Japan and will work with technology companies and government departments of both countries to support the commercial success of UK technology companies in the Japanese market.

What will the Jobholder be Expected to Achieve:

  • Provide advice to UK technology companies on entering and growing in the Japanese market and collaborating with Japanese corporates. 
  • Build up relationships with Japanese companies to understand their technology and business needs and identify opportunities for UK technology companies to meet these needs. 
  • Lead events and activities to promote UK exports to Japan and to raise awareness of UK Technology, such as the major tech trade shows (e.g. CEATEC and Innovation Leaders' Summit), as well as seminars and conferences, including providing logistical support and delivery.
  • Develop a strong understanding of key technology sector trends and issues in the UK and Japan, including through gathering sector knowledge/market intelligence and developing a network of useful contacts in Japan and in the UK.
  • Account manage key stakeholders in the UK and Japan in order to develop business opportunities for UK companies. 
  • Identify market access barriers which hamper UK tech companies from entering or operating in the Japanese market and work to resolve them with relevant teams and stakeholders. 
  • Work closely with other teams in the Japan Network (the Embassy in Tokyo and Consultate General in Osaka) to carry out all the key operations mentioned above.
  • Carry out regular administration tasks, for example leading the team’s customer relationship management (CRM) system, and maintaining databases of projects, procurement and handling of payments, team’s information management etc. 
  • Contribute to the wider work of the Japan Network, such as corporate committees, Japan Network wide events such as the King’s Birthday Party, ministerial and senior level visits as required and take an active role in the Crisis Preparedness and Response process.

  • Previous experience working in private or public sector organisations (preferably 3+ years), with experience of stakeholder relationship management, event delivery and project management.  
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Interest in the technology sector and understanding of technology sector issues.
  • Excellent written and spoken English and Japanese
  • Highly proficient IT skills (especially Word, PowerPoint and Excel)

Language Requirements:

  • Language: Japanese and English
  • Fluency (oral and written) in Japanese with business level English, or vice versa.
  • JLPT1 or equivalent for non-native Japanese speakers.
  • IELTS band 7 or TOEIC 875 points or above or equivalent for non-native English speakers.
  • Japanese and English language skills will be tested during the application process.
  • Experience in market research.
  • Experience in working in the technology sectors.

Working Patterns:

Full time and office based. 37.5 hours per week. The Embassy supports flexible working patterns (including up to three days working from home per week, subject to business need) and can be agreed in consultation with your line manager.
