Main purpose of job:


Tokyo Defence Section lead on all Maritime Domain engagements in Japan.  Plan and execute UK Maritime personnel/asset visits and support UK’s Maritime Strategic Campaign planning. This Officer will work closely with the Defence Attaché and Deputy Defence Attaché.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

1.    UK Maritime asset visits (40%)

  • Plan and execute UK Maritime asset visits to Japan to contribute to UK’s regional objectives/prosperity.
  • Pre-identify issues and liaise with Japanese Authorities/United Nations Command Rear to provide solution to the issue.
  • Support UK-Japan – Partner Nations Maritime Exercises in the region.

2.    Maritime Strategic Campaign (40%)

  • Supporting UK’s Maritime Strategic Campaign objectives by analysing the current and future maritime security trends in the region and develop/execute a long-term maritime engagement plan in Japan to contribute to the regional security and UK’s prosperity.
  • Support Royal Navy’s visits to Japan to understand Japanese/US desires and opportunities.
  • Provide an opportunity for Royal Navy-JMSDF to discuss future engagements and lead the discussion to contribute to regional security and UK’s prosperity. (Bilateral/Trilateral Navy Staff Talks.)

3.    Defence VIP Visits (10%)

  • Liaise with Japanese Government etc... to support Defence VIP visits to Japan to attain defence country objectives and contribute to wider Embassy objectives.
  • Create and Execute visit programs to attain objectives.
  • Support creating the briefing.

4.    Corporate Work (10%)

  • Corporate work including crisis work.
  • Fluent spoken and written Japanese language-level or Japanese language Proficiency Test (JLPT) at level N1 is necessary as daily communication is required with non-English speakers.
  • Excellent business communication skills in English (orally and in writing)
  • Project Management experience
  • Good IT skills, particularly Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc)
  • Strong communications skills and ability to work within a close knit team. Ability to develop relationships and network is also vital.
  • Experience on VIP visits from overseas after C19 outbreak.
  • Knowledge of Japanese government systems, cultural awareness, and of Japanese business etiquette

Language requirements: 

Language:  Fluent Japanese speaker (JLPT N1 or above), Professional level of English required with experience of use in a business environment.

  • Interest in defence security issues.
  • Motivation to understand Japanese legal restrictions when conducting defence activities in Japan.
  • Pre-existing experience in the Def & Security sector and/or Government or Defence ministry experience

Working patterns:

Full time and office based. 37.5 hours per week. This particular role allows for flexibility in start and end times, working compressed hours, working remotely for one day a week, and the possibility of a job share arrangement, subject to agreement with management.
