Who are we? 

The British Embassy in Paris is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. It is also part of the France Network (including offices in Lyon, Bordeaux, Marseille and representation to international organisations in Paris (OECD and UNESCO) and Strasbourg (CoE).

The Department for International Trade (DIT) promotes British trade and investment around the world; helps to build an appetite for British goods and services globally; and works to encourage foreign investment into the UK. DIT also brings together policy, promotion and financial expertise to break down barriers to trade & investment and to help businesses to succeed. The DIT team in France comprises 35 people in Paris, Lyon and Bordeaux. The team works with both French investors and British companies doing business in France across the main business sectors of the economy.

What we are looking for:

The British Embassy is looking to appoint a Trade & Investment Adviser to join its Department for International Trade (DIT) team to help drive Britain’s prosperity objectives in Sport and Services. 

This is an entry-level role designed to support DIT France activity in our busy Sport, Retail and Services (SRS) cluster to help to deliver outcomes against our prioritised goals for market access, inward investment and exports. The individual recruited would be part of the DIT France team. A one-year fixed-term contract would be offered with the expectation that this would become permanent on the basis of performance over this period of time. 

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • The successful candidate will support the work of the Sport and Services campaigns, working closely with DIT colleagues in France and Europe to promote and deliver high potential trade and investment opportunities in the form of export successes for British companies in France and new French investment projects landing in the UK. The successful candidate will support businesses working in a range of sectors including  financial and professional services, insurance, legal services, consulting and sport. There will also be an important focus on commercial opportunities stemming from major sporting events in France in the next two years – notable the Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics.  
  • The successful candidate will provide high quality guidance and support to French and British businesses across these areas; and will help to identify and communicate commercial opportunities to the UK (including from the Paris 2024 tender platform).  They will make use of trade fairs, conferences and other commercial events to build contacts and identify business possibilities; organise or support commercial events in the British Embassy; and make use of inward and outward trade missions and other export/investment tools. A range of services will be provided to business, including in-market introductions, in-depth market research, technical support or guidance around market access. 
  • The jobholder will work proactively with French and British business representatives and a wide range of public/private sector interests to communicate and deliver high value export and investment opportunities linked to the UK’s competitive strengths. The work will be varied and demanding and the successful candidate will need to be flexible, able to juggle priorities and to work on often demanding timelines. 

Essential on arrival:

  • Previous commercial experience such as experience of sales, client management, trade or investment promotion, etc;
  • Proficient in English and French (both written and spoken, minimum of C1 level according to the CEFR framework);
  • BA degree;
  • Experience in project management (e.g. in relation to the delivery of trade missions, visit programmes, events);
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work well with English and French stakeholders, commercial clients, external contacts, and a wide and diverse Embassy team;
  • Ability to mobilize and coordinate networks;
  • Customer focus (concern for quality and drive for continuous improvement in the service provided);
  • Ability to work under demanding timelines and juggle competing priorities effectively;
  • Drive and enthusiasm combined with the ability to deliver, working as part of a team;
  • Great IT skills (especially Word, PowerPoint and Excel).

Would be an advantage:

  • Any career experience in any of the sectors mentioned in the job description – especially sport or services;
  • Experience of working in an international environment, representing their organisation in an international context, ideally a multilateral context.
