The British Embassy in Slovakia is part of a worldwide network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a Residence Manager & Supervisor to join our team.


Why should you apply:


The main purpose of the job is to be a hands-on manager of the British Ambassador’s Residence, combining office duties with a strong representational and customer service-orientated approach to Residence events and visitors, much as a butler would do. This role works closely with, and to, the Ambassador and his wife on the day-to-day management of the Residence and planning and execution of Residence events, including official breakfasts, lunches, dinners, receptions and workshops.

The role requires an ability to juggle a wide range of different requirements – from receiving ministerial-level visitors to emergency clean-up of broken crockery. The post holder will manage a team of two (Maid & Chef) and work closely with the Embassy, Facilities Management (Mitie) and Residence maintenance teams, gardeners, the Ambassador’s Executive Assistant, embassy drivers and policy officers in the delivery of events. 

What will you be expected to achieve:

Day to day running of the British Ambassador’s official Residence in Bratislava

-  Work closely with the British Ambassador and spouse
-  Oversee maintenance of Residence and garden
-  Keep the Residence in a well maintained style, presentable at all times

  • ensuring furniture & decor of the Residence in good order, sourcing replacements if necessary
  • ensuring crockery, cutlery, glassware and silver in perfect order, and inventory control

-    Order wine and spirits stocks, keeping an up-to-date log of held stock, and maintaining wine cellar in good order
-    Order cleaning materials, help Maid set up a log of held stock
-    Order other necessary items for Residence as required at the request of Maid, Chef, HMA’s spouse, etc

Line Manage Chef & Maid

-  Keep track of working hours, TOIL, holidays, sick & medical leave, official records
-  Develop and maintain a roster of suitable replacement support when Maid on leave or alternative Chef required for short notice needs or longer holiday periods
-  Complete annual appraisals on Residence staff
-  Ensure bedrooms are clean and in good condition, and prepared to a high standard for house guests
-  Ensure the kitchen is kept clean and is in good working order
-  Identify learning and development opportunities for Residence staff
-  Responsible for meeting health & safety, hygiene and other statutory requirements and standards


Welcome & assist visitors

-help with serving coffee/tea/drinks and light food if waiter not present (both for events and official house guests for longer stays)

Event planning

-  Work closely with the Ambassador‘s Executive Assistant

  •  on residence meetings, visits & event dates, guests lists, special guest requirements
  • working together on seating plans, name & menu cards (including printing)
  •  maintaining and updating Residence calendar

-    Work closely with the Ambassador and spouse on house décor details, flowers, menus & set up of events
-    Preparation, organisation and delivery of events

  • organise lay out of each room for different events 
  • producing accurate cost estimates for all activities  
  • working with outside organisations involved in event delivery
  • booking external staff (waiters, guards, other helpers or professionals)
  • supervising and taking responsibility for tuhe smooth delivery of events in progress
  • arranging rental of necessary extra equipment (audio, kitchen equipment, glassware, crockery, tents, etc.)
  • maintain accurate files, records and photos of events

Other duties

-    Liaise with Corporate Services Manager in the British Embassy on all budget matters for the Residence and events
-    Reconciliation of Accounts after events, and after making purchases
-    Other duties as required

This role requires flexible working hours, which includes early morning or late evening and/or occasional weekend work.

This is a full-time, fixed term position for one year (with possibility for extension upon mutual agreement) with a probation period of  3 months.

The monthly salary for this position is € 1,966.31 gross, payable 13 times a year.

The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background check and security clearance.
