The British Embassy in Rome is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a Economic Officer working in the EU Economic team.

The position offers the opportunity to work in one of the UK’s key European Embassies. Italy is one of the UK’s main economic partners in Europe. The Embassy supports this relationship by providing expert, high quality analysis, advice, and reporting to UK government stakeholders on Italian economic developments and Italy’s position on key EU competitiveness issues. The post holder will contribute to the economic debate in Italy directly, through organising meetings between influencers and policy makers, and through organising events to promote UK views on these issues which are fundamental to the UK’s national interest and to its role in Europe.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide expert, high quality analysis, advice, and reporting to London stakeholders on Italian economic and macro-financial developments and Italy’s position on key EU competitiveness issues;
  • Promote UK’s EU economic aims and support UK prosperity objectives;
  • Monitor, analyse and report on Italian reforms and economic policy developments;
  • Produce weekly economic note and frequent ad hoc reports on topical elements of government economic policy (eg structural reforms, taxation and spending);
  • Respond by deadlines to UK government enquiries, providing accurate data and high quality responses;
  • Monitor and report developments on Italian EU economic views with specific attention to single market, digital, industrial policy, better regulation and trade policy agendas. Deliver UK priorities on these issues, including holding regular meetings with Italian policymakers and organising UK ministerial/senior official visits;
  • Contribute analysis and provide support for wider UK commercial aims in Italy through working with UK Trade and Investment colleagues in Milan and Prosperity and Financial Sector colleagues in Rome;
  • Enhance the Embassy’s network, outreach and public profile on all issues, particularly with think tanks, political foundations and NGOs, including the organisation of events to promote UK aims;
  • Actively participate in a wider corporate roles within the Embassy.

  • Graduate-level qualification and detailed understanding of current economic trends and issues (a qualification in economics or a related discipline would be highly desirable);
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills, especially written to be able to produce rapid, succinct and insightful reports and analysis of Italian economic developments and positions of key Italian players;
  • Excellent command (both oral and written) of English and Italian, Common European Framework level/equivalent C1 or above;
  • Strong networking and relationship management skills. The successful candidate will need to develop and extend existing contacts, and maintain a wide network in Rome. He/she will need to build relationships across a range of London stakeholders: our Prime Minister’s Office; HM Treasury; Business Ministry; the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and the Bank of England. He/she will also need to work closely with colleagues in the Italy network, especially the EU and Economic Team in Rome and the Trade and Investment Team in Milan;
  • Flexible approach, strong initiative and adaptability to changing UK priorities. This will require juggling short-term priorities while making progress on longer term goals.




  • Experience of programme management and event delivery would be an asset.

This is a full-time temporary position with a contract of 12 months with possibility of renewal, graded B3 according to the FCO grading structure.

The monthly gross salary is € 2,929. The salary is paid monthly 14 times per year including € 10.33 EDR paid 13 times per year, with double salary payments in June and December. If working less than a full calendar year, the additional salary payments will be pro-rata.

Working hours are 35 hrs per week with some flexibility allowed.

The appointment is subject to security clearance and the successful completion of a 4-month probationary period.

All staff employed by the British Embassy are subject to Italian income tax rate deductions (IRPEF). However, the administration of these tax payments will vary depending on nationality.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Italian State Social Security Scheme.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Rome are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Italian employment law.
