View Vacancy - Consular Intern
Main purpose of job:
Support the Consular team in delivering excellent frontline consular services and assistance to customers in person, via telephone and e-mail, along with research and preventive work.
Roles and responsibilities / What will the jobholder be expected to achieve?
- Give support to the Consular team in all areas of consular work, from support of British nationals and file keeping to events logistics.
- Serve as connection point between consular officers and Mexican Government officials, British ex-pat community and other important stakeholders, in Mexico – an opportunity to improve your information gathering and communication skills.
- Help maintain clear, accurate, transparent and auditable files and records of all financial transactions for consular services – an opportunity to learn about financial and information management.
- Create and maintain lists of Mexican and international contacts for the Section; NGOs, charities, shelters; joining consular officers on meetings with them if required – an opportunity to widen your horizons and professional network.
- Work closely with other sections of the Embassy on Crisis Response Plan and Consular Contingency Planning – an opportunity to learn about strategic thinking and planning.
- Help with the creation/implementation of consular preventive work through campaigns – an opportunity to develop project management skills.
- Support the corporate activities and other sections of the Embassy with the planning and execution of events – an opportunity to know the work of other sections and broaden your network.
- Raise the Consular Section's and the Embassy's profiles by proactively engaging with the wider FCO audience in corporate affairs – an opportunity to start building your professional reputation.
Essential on arrival: Good communication skills in English and Spanish; good drafting skills in English and Spanish; Knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Desirable:
- Partial or completed university studies in International Relations/Business, Law, Communications, Tourism, Social Work or any other relevant degree.
- Designing skills with Office and Adobe software.
- Basic understanding of the relevant Mexican Institutions and legal/bureaucratic processes.
- Basic Understanding of UK context and International organisations and conventions.
