The British Embassy in Hungary is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. It is now seeking a Head of Communications.

As the Head of Embassy’s Communications Team, you will lead and provide strategic direction for the UK government’s media and communication outreach in Hungary. You will develop and execute a communications strategy to expand and target our audience, and develop strategies to meet the Embassy’s objectives. You will shape public perceptions of the UK in Hungary and help foster support for the economic and political outcomes via your implementation of the Embassy’s strategic communications campaigns to counter Russian disinformation and promote greater understanding in Hungary of UK policies on Russia, deliver consular prevention campaigns, and support commercial events. You will curate and utilise an external network of media contacts to ensure our core messages are well placed, and further you will act as Embassy Spokesperson and be a reliable contact for senior journalists and editors. You will lead work across multiples areas and themes, in a confident manner, taking a self-start approach.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Own, implement and support delivery of the Embassy communications strategy, ensuring it is aligned with and supports the delivery of the Embassy’s country business plan objectives. Embed a campaign based approach to comms across the embassy. Oversee, design and implement themed campaigns, engaging, supporting and collaborating with policy team leads (35%)
  • Media work: Oversee and manage relationships with key stakeholders in FCDO, Department for International Trade and the Hungarian Media, and act as main point of contact between journalists and the embassy to deliver Embassy objectives. Provide media handling advice to the embassy. (20%)
  • Oversee and develop the Embassy’s social media platform presence (twitter, website, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram etc.) and grow our social media audience, developing engaging content that has impact, appeals to our audience. Develop creative content for these campaigns (35%)
  • Lead and motivate the Communications team (x1 Deputy Head of comms), to deliver an excellent service that includes press/media management, press analysis, reporting, events and digital communications (10%)
  • You will be required to translate complex UK policy into influential public message and events that land with an audience heavily influenced by pro-government media.

•    Excellent English and Hungarian both verbal and written (minimum C1 level for CEFR framework *)
•    You will have at least 5 years of:
      - experience in delivering and leading multiple and broad strategic communications campaigns, in particular via social media
      - management experience
      - work experience in a Public Relations , media or related field
•    Experience in videography, filming and social media expertise including the ability to use social media analytical tools.
•    Experience in communicating an influential public message and events that land with an audience heavily influenced by pro-government media.
•    Press handling experience, including experience as a spokesperson, providing poise and calm under pressure
•    Knowledge of the Hungarian media landscape
•    Masters level qualification in Strategic Communication, marketing or equivalent professional training
•    Creative thinking and proactive problem-solving skills

This is a full-time position of 5 days (35 hours net per week) a fixed-term contract of 24 months with the possibility of extension by mutual agreement.

The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background check and security clearance. You must have pre-existing work authorisation for Hungary in order to apply.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy are subject to terms and conditions service according to Hungarian employment law.

Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Hungary and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
