Main purpose of job:

The role will be based in the Department for International Trade (DIT) Team of the British Embassy, Jakarta, and will work closely with the Indonesia Tech Hub team and colleagues in the Overseas Development Assistance (ODA) funded Digital Access Programme to pursue commercial opportunities arising from their programme work.  The job-holder will also collaborate with Embassy outreach officers in Bandung, Surabaya and Bali to identify local opportunities and with DIT Tech leads in UK and Singapore on regional events. 

The jobholder will proactively drive trade promotion activity between UK and Indonesia across digital tech sectors and support wider UK Government objectives, including trade policy/market access, inward and outward investment and ODA programmes.

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of an international team that contributes to the success of the UK’s trade goals.  We are looking for a dynamic, well-networked individual from the Indonesian tech scene for this role, to initiate and pursue new business opportunities across a number of tech-related sectors.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

The post holder will:

  • Work closely with the ODA-funded Tech Hub which aims to support tech entrepreneurship through partnerships with local digital ecosystem stakeholders and facilitate partnerships between local tech firms (including tech start-ups) and international companies (across all sectors) in the form of commercial partnerships or joint ventures.
  • Take the lead in identifying and promoting commercial opportunities between the UK and Indonesian digital tech sectors, including through targeted sales and marketing campaigns.  To do this the job-holder must understand business and innovation needs across all tech-related sectors and co-ordinate with DIT colleagues leading on specific tech areas such as health-tech, ed-tech and fintech.
  • Raise the profile of UK Tech in Indonesia and promote the strength of the UK digital tech sector as the leading destination for digital tech businesses, investment and talent. Work with the DIT /Embassy marketing teams to disseminate information of interest to Indonesian and UK stakeholders through a range of media.
  • Develop sector knowledge, both of UK capability and Indonesian requirements including AI, Big Data and other UK Industrial Strategy priorities. 
  • Develop and record Indonesia market intelligence through research, company visits, relationship management of Indonesian businesses and meetings with relevant officials and stakeholders.
  • Relationship manage and provide in market support for UK tech companies, which have both the capability and appetite to secure contracts or invest in Indonesia
  • Share knowledge and insights on market access issues with relevant colleagues to shape UK programme responses.
  • Work closely with Embassy and regional colleagues to plan and deliver activities, including inward and outward missions, seminars, exhibition groups and workshops, high-level Ministerial and senior official visits.
  • Support the newly-appointed D6 UK-Based Digital Trade Network Officer and work closely with colleagues in the regional digital network.

This position is 1 year fixed-term with 6-month break out clause.

  • English and Bahasa Indonesia – fluent spoken and written
  • Experience in, and knowledge of, the digital tech sector within Indonesia
  • Experience in and knowledge of the Indonesian business landscape. Excellent networking skills including across international environments
  • A degree plus at least two - five year’s work experience in a relevant role such as sales, management, marketing, trade promotion or business development;
  • Events and project management skills and experience delivering results against deadlines/targets;
  • A proven track record of successful relationship management with high-level stakeholders and international clients;
  • Clear communicator. Ability to provide oral and written briefings, produce meeting notes and undertake regular email and phone based communications;
  • Strong knowledge in IT applications and MS Windows;
  • Evidence of adaptability and ability to prioritise against competing, challenging tasking;
  • Highly motivated, passionate about innovation and technology
  • Ability to travel within Indonesia and overseas when required.
  • Familiarity with the UK is not required, but could be an advantage;
  • Market research and analysis experience would be helpful but not essential;
