Science and Innovation

The role ensures the smooth operation of the Science and Innovation Network in the British Consulate in Shanghai. The jobholder will co-ordinate and implement science and innovation events and projects in East China, including managing project and administration budgets. In addition, the role involves working with the Communications team to plan science-related communications.

The successful candidate will have strong numerical skills, attention to detail and work well as part of a team, including providing research on developments in science and innovation and assisting the sector leads for Future Cities and Life Sciences. The role holder will provide administrative support, booking transport, updating the stakeholder database and managing stakeholder relations, and may be required to translate on occasions.

The jobholder is expected to achieve-

Project and event co-ordination and implementation

Support team in planning and delivering science and innovation events and activities, for example, working with partner organisations, venues, booking transport, planning itineraries and management of other logistics. For events, managing registration process, guest list, working with event partners, catering, negotiating costs, etc. Strong customer and stakeholder management skills required. Familiar with Microsoft Word and Excel.

Managing finances and admin tasks

Tracking project and admin budgets throughout the year. Become familiar with FCO Hyperion system to forecast project spending. Accounting for all expenses on Prism system, processing invoices, working with vendors, general financial enquiries. Attention to detail needed.

Desk research and sector-support

Desk research and activity planning, in particular in Future Cities and Life Sciences sectors. Delivery of project activities. Opportunity to take lead on project activities and events and cultivate series of science and innovation contacts. All projects build towards UK science and innovation objectives of delivering R&D partnerships and commercial outcomes and of supporting UK science policy aims.

Communications

Working with Comms team and lead for science and innovation communications in Beijing, planning comms activities for East China via Weibo, WeChat, gov.uk website and other channels.

  • Must be fluent in English and Chinese
  • Basic Microsoft Office skills, including Word and Excel
  • Admin and budget management experience
  • Interest in science and innovation (sectors covered by China team are Agri-Tech, Digital, Clean Energy, Future Cities, Life Sciences, Future Manufacturing and Space)
  • Translation experience
  • Knowledge of either UK or Chinese science and research system
  • Project deliveries, communications and events management
