The British Embassy in Sofia is part of the United Kingdom’s diplomatic service, a worldwide network representing British political, economic and consular interests in Bulgaria. The British Embassy in Sofia is looking for an experienced and motivated Communications and Press Officer. You will be all round communications professional providing a press officer function for the Embassy along with digital skills and experience of working on public facing communication campaigns. We want a creative thinker who is comfortable operating in a fast-paced environment, and can help the Embassy achieve their policy objectives through the power of strategic communications.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Media & Press

  • Media work: media monitoring and reporting, drafting press releases and social media content, placing content in the local media, arranging interviews and press events;
  • Provide support for media engagement by Ambassador and other senior colleagues;
  • Maintain and develop good contacts with the Bulgarian media and use them to promote UK policies and initiatives;
  • Maintain and enhance the Embassy’s existing network of media contacts
  • Provide London with regular reporting and analysis of Bulgarian media

Strategic Communications

  • Work with colleagues across the Embassy and contribute to the design and implementation of strategic communications campaigns, consular campaigns,
  • Helping to deliver the Embassy’s broader Public Diplomacy activities, promoting UK/Bulgarian relations, including through Embassy events,
  • Oversee the day-to-day management of the British Embassy social media accounts.
  • Creatively develop social media strategies, looking for creative ways to integrate digital into all areas of the Embassy’s work.

  • Enthusiastic, energetic and highly creative team player with a proven passion for public communications;
  • Proven experience in managing and delivering a demanding workload as well as responding flexibly to changing priorities;
  • Demonstrable experience of developing successful public communication campaigns;
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a related field;
  • Strong communication skills – written and oral, able to communicate effectively in English and Bulgarian;
  • Experience working with (Bulgarian) media;
  • Social and Digital Media skills.
  • Experience of managing social media platforms;
  • Experience or knowledge of working in an international environment;
  • Experience of original content production (photo and video editing etc.);
  • Event management.

This is a full-time position (36 hours per week) for a temporary appointment of 12 months.

Monthly salary for this position is BGN 2427.56 gross, payable 13 times a year.

The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background and security clearance. Anyone with right of residence and employment in Bulgaria may apply, including all EU / EEA citizens and the family members of EU / EEA nationals exercising a treaty right in Bulgaria.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy is subject to terms and conditions service according to Bulgarian employment law.
