Main purpose of job

This is a challenging position within the Climate and Environment team at the British Embassy in Brasilia.  The Climate and Environment team foster collaboration between Brazil and the UK through high-level visits, missions and programmes.  The UK International Climate Finance currently has over £150 million invested in Brazil in programmes focused on forestry, low carbon agriculture, sustainable infrastructure and cities.  We are a team of 4 people working across Brazil, based in Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.

This position will contribute to the British Embassy work to combat Climate Change, including diplomatic action to support delivery of the 26th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) in Dec 2020.

What will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

  • To support implementation of the UK’s COP26 strategy for Brazil, working to the senior policy officer and with the wider climate, political, prosperity and communications teams.  This will include policy and project delivery aligned with COP26 objectives that supports long-term decarbonisation, and resilience & adaptation objectives in Brazil, which may include clean growth, energy transition, sustainable agriculture, forestry economy, nature-based solutions and green finance.
  • To support the Brazil Network and Whitehall colleagues on engagement with Brazil, through reporting on environmental policy developments in Brazil.
  • To support the senior policy officer to liaise with officials in the Brazilian Government (Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Agriculture, etc.) on policy and operational elements of delivering COP26.
  • To assist the Brazil Network on engagement with non-Government actors, through stakeholder mapping and building working level contacts in sub-national authorities (cities, states), representatives of businesses, and civil society.
  • To support Ministerial and official visits from the UK related to COP26 and climate events in Brazil that may include organising visit agendas and supporting events.
  • To hold a corporate responsibility objective (such as on Learning and Development, Reward & Recognition, Wellbeing or Tech Overhaul) which contributes to the wider corporate agenda of the Brazil Network.

Essential on arrival:  

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field: Climate and Environment Science, International Relations or Public Policy, or similar.
  • Experience working for an organisation in a relevant field: national or state government, international organisations or agencies, preferably in climate change.
  • Strong understanding of international climate change policy, with relevant experience including from university or previous professional work experience.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Desirable:  

  • Experience of managing diverse and senior level relationships.
