The British Embassy in Rome is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a COP26 Press & Events officer to support the delivery of the 26th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26).

The main purpose of this job is to help deliver communications, events, outreach and visits linked to the UK/Italy partnership of the 26th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26). For 2020, we plan an ambitious programme of events, visits and communications in Rome and in different Italian regions culminating in the Preparatory event or Pre-COP26 hosted by the Italian Government in Milan this autumn. You will work with the COP26 officer and senior colleagues around the Italy network to plan and deliver this programme in support of our COP26 objectives.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Design and implement a strategic communications plan for COP26 working closely with London, the UK Italy network and ensuring that Italian/UK activity is complementary. Work with policy colleagues to develop and deliver meetings, seminars and other events, aimed at increasing favourable attitude towards UK objectives and the UK/Italy partnership, ensuring media coverage and participation. Overview of evaluation of impact.

Support planning and logistics for VIP and senior official visitors to Italy on COP26 business, by liaising with internal Embassy colleagues.

Prepare draft media briefs, interviews, articles, press releases. Occasional contact handling with journalists. On occasion to contribute to the daily press review and media monitoring activities of the Embassy.

Provide ad hoc wider outreach, communications and media support to the Italy Press & Public Affairs team of the embassy.


Actively participate in a wider corporate capacity within the Embassy, contributing to the wider corporate agenda of the Italy network.


Fluent written and spoken English and Italian (Common European Framework level/equivalent C1 or above);

Experience of working in communications, media relations and events;

Flexible approach, strong initiative and adaptability to evolving work priorities;

Strong project management skills;

Excellent IT skills, including proficiency with MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Teams);

Good networking and relationship management skills. The successful candidate will need to work with colleagues to develop and extend existing contacts, and handle professionally effective communications with a wide network of stakeholders and participants in our events;

Proven track record in working well with others both as part of a close-knit team but also working with colleagues across the Italy network and stakeholders in the UK;

Strong communication skills with internal and external stakeholders.


Experience and expertise in climate change policy through academia and/or work;

Experience of working for a national government, preferably either British or Italian.

This is a full-time temporary position with a contract of 12 months, with possibility of extension, graded at B3(L) according to the FCO grading structure.

The monthly gross salary is € 2,929.00. The salary is paid monthly 14 times per year including € 10.33 EDR paid 13 times per year, with double salary payments in June and December. If working less than a full calendar year, the additional salary payments will be pro-rata.

Working hours are 35 hrs per week with some flexibility allowed.

The appointment is subject to security clearance and the successful completion of a 4-month probationary period.

All staff employed by the British Embassy are subject to Italian income tax rate deductions (IRPEF). However, the administration of these tax payments will vary depending on nationality.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Italian State Social Security Scheme.

Visa/Passport requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Italy and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract. Additional requirements may become necessary after 31st December 2020.
