The British Embassy in Spain is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now recruiting for the temporary position of Consular Assistant, based in Alicante.

The selected candidate will assist the team, providing a high quality, professional and efficient consular service to visiting and resident British nationals in Alicante. Full induction and training will be provided to the successful candidate.

Main Duties / Responsibilities

  • To produce Emergency Travel Documents when customers are unable to obtain a full passport before travelling back to the UK, and ensure production is accurate and timely. To assist British nationals with their Emergency Travel Document applications.
  • To handle counter, telephone and written enquiries from members of the public and local authorities, dealing with a wide range of issues.
  • To keep accurate records for management information purposes, and cashier duties and reconciliation of fees.
  • To assist with organising meetings and events.
  • To provide general office support/administrative duties.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Good IT skills (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills - ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in Spain and the UK as well as the public.
  • Attention to detail, strong analytical perspective and problem solving skills.
  • Excellent organisational and administrative skills.
  • Ability to work at pace and prioritise, managing an often heavy workload.
  • Previous experience in customer service.
  • Fluency in both English and Spanish (a minimum of C2 level).
  • Experience in a social work or welfare support setting.
  • An understanding of the issues that British nationals in Spain may face, both tourists and residents.
  • University degree.

This is a full-time temporary contract. The working hours are 37.5 hrs per week. Normal working hours are Monday to Friday 0800 to 1600 hours. However, some flexibility will be expected as, on occasions, out-of-hours assistance to British nationals may be required.

The successful candidate will be subject to a confirmation of a background check, security clearance, and the successful completion of a probationary period.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Spanish Social Security Scheme and will therefore not be entitled to any gratuity from the Embassy/Consulate based on gross annual salary.

Regarding taxation, the Consulate in Alicante is part of the British Mission in Spain, and as such supervised by the British Embassy. The Embassy is a Diplomatic Mission with tax exempt status and does not collect taxes for other States. Employees are fully responsible for payment of Spanish income tax at the legally required rate.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Spain are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Spanish employment law.
