Main purpose of job:

The role of Digital Officer (East China region) is an important and demanding one.  With digital activity fundamental to diplomacy, the successful candidate will be responsible for leading on developing and implementing integrated digital strategies and plans. Developing the UK’s engagement with China across digital channels is a priority for the UK and our profile is critical to success. 

The Digital Communications Officer will have an exciting role in promoting the UK’s messages to audiences across East China across a range of sectors.  The jobholder will be tasked with integrated and impact-driven digital strategy and planning, content production and managing the Consulate’s day-to-day digital and social media presence. They will focus on broadening and deepening engagement with audiences, often developing media and KOL partnerships to do so. The post holder will also be responsible for overseeing branding.

Activities will involve working together closely with the Communications Officer, Senior Communications Officer and Head of Communications, as well as with the Consul-General.  Reporting to the Senior Communications Officer, the jobholder will have the opportunity to manage digital communications/marketing activities independently but with support available when necessary. They will also work with colleagues across the China network at Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, Department for International Trade, British Council, Visit Britain and other counterparts, as well as colleagues in the UK. Given the highly important and integrated nature of a digital role, the jobholder must have excellent teamwork, interpersonal and communication skills.

The successful applicant will be given a high level of exposure to senior visitors from the UK. In the past, visitors have included the Prime Minister, Foreign Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer, as well as senior UK business leaders.

This year the team are focusing on an ambitious climate change campaign – Together for our Planet – ahead of the UK hosting the COP26 summit later this year.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Integrated digital strategy and planning

Increase awareness of and engagement with the UK’s strengths through digital activity. Lead on designing, developing and implementing impact-driven, innovative communications/marketing strategies and integrated cross-channel plans in the region. This includes across visits, campaigns and managing events. Communications must be insight driven, ensuring it is timely, targeted, cohesive and relevant – focusing on broadening and deepening audience engagement.

  • Digital Content Production and channel management

Produce content for and manage Consulate digital channels including FCDO East China social media channels, network websites, intranet, and apps. Plan and produce clear content schedules and forward-look calendars. Provide clear and consistent reporting on performance, and optimise accordingly. Reviewing new technologies and exploring new developments in the digital landscape to ensure Consulate communications exploit emerging trends and remain relevant to their audience.

  • Digital partnership development

Proactively developing and managing innovative, integrated and impact-driven digital partnerships, finding new and creative ways of delivering our work. Exploring opportunities for online collaboration with various external contacts, partners and KOLs.

  • Brand Management

Growing and managing the Consulate, FCDO and GREAT brands in East China. Overseeing brand management across consulate digital marketing activity and events.

  • Support the wider Communications team to meet Consulate objectives

 Researching and developing audience insight. Providing data analysis and evaluation of activities carried out (statistical and qualitative). Updating digital communications contacts list. Responsibility for internal digital communications, with skills in researching online news sources. Internal reporting on channel performance and relevant news/trends.  

Academy Education:

  • Bachelor Degree

Professional skills/ Qualifications:

  • Social/digital media background.
  • Content creation for social media – including WeChat and Weibo
  • Proven video production and editing skills
  • Proven photo shooting and editing skills
  • Infographic design
  • Basic MS Office Skills

Experience:

  • Experience of digital communications environment in China is essential.
  • Awareness or experience of the UK, particularly around public diplomacy objectives.
  • Experience of planning and executing social media plans, developing content calendars, drafting social media posts, and conducting digital campaigns is essential.
  • Experience of creating engaging online content (e.g. infographics, HTML5, creative imagery and video content).
  • Experience of working with and network of Key Opinion Leaders (KOL) is beneficial.

Language requirements:

  • Excellent command of English both spoken and written;
  • Native level of Mandarin Chinese, both spoken and written;

We offer a competitive package, which includes basic salary, good leave entitlement, and insurance plan, etc. The gross starting salary (before all deductions) for this position is RMB 11,272/ month for Mainland China Nationals and an abated monthly salary of RMB 15,789/ month for British Nationals and spouses/ partners (all nationalities) of diplomats who are ‘W’ (diplomatic) visa holders and meet passport criteria.

We also offer excellent development opportunities and a 22-day annual leave entitlement in pro rata. Conditioned working hours is 35 hours/ week from Monday to Friday and flexible working can be arranged upon personal needs.
