Main purpose of job:

The British Embassy in Bamako is part of a worldwide network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas.  The British Embassy is fairly new – established in 2015 – but with a strong aid portfolio and political interest in Mali.  The Corporate Services, Estates Manager role, will help ensure the Embassy platform performs to the highest level by maintaining the estate and enforcing high health and safety standards.

Roles and responsibilities:

To manage the FCO’s estate in Bamako to a professional and efficient standard, including negotiating leases with landlords, ensuring compliance of residential and office accommodation, and responsibility for the handover and upkeep of properties

Estates Management

This job will be responsible for the overall management of office and residential accommodation for UK Government staff in Bamako, including:

  • Management of British Embassy Bamako’s housing policy, ensuring that housing provided to staff is prepared to a good standard and fully equipped
  • Supporting the Corporate Services Team with the negotiation and management of leases of HMG properties, including renewals and renegotiations where appropriate
  • With technical works officers, ensuring all steps are taken for health and safety and FCO compliance, and take all reasonable precautions to address issues
  • Management of minor maintenance and building works where required
  • With the Corporate Services Team, liaison with FCO Estates and Security Directorate
  • Reviewing state of furniture, housing packs and floats
  • Ensuring that data on all estates is accurately and promptly updated, including maintenance costs.
  • Further tasks as and when required in support of the Corporate Services team and wider Embassy as a whole.

  • Good track record of delivering excellent standards of customer care.
  • Strong experience of managing suppliers.
  • Excellent time management, self-starter skills and an ability to work under pressure.
  • Previous experience in working both as part of a team and unsupervised.
  • Fluent English and French (written as well as spoken).
  • IT skills to include experience of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Good organisational skills, accuracy and an attention to detail.
  • An ability to forward plan and coordinate activity among a range of stakeholders.
  • A clean current driving licence and recent experience of driving in Mali.
  • Recent line management experience.

The British Embassy is a small but friendly and supportive working environment.  Colleagues regularly benefit from learning and development opportunities in Mali and there will be the opportunity to travel regionally for training.

Working patterns:

Working hours are from 8:00am to 16:30 Monday to Thursday and 8:00 to 12:30 on Fridays. A 35.5 hour week including lunch break. Annual leave is 25 days in addition to 14 public holidays annually.
