Main purpose of job:
The UK Department for Business and Trade (DBT) champions open and fair global trade that drives growth, creates better jobs and higher wages, and improves living standards in the UK and around the world.
This role is a great opportunity for someone to work in a broader team assisting a range of UK companies in priority sectors to enter the New Zealand market, or to support their NZ market expansion plans. It is an outward facing role, which requires strong interpersonal skills to develop and maintain high-level relationships across business and Government stakeholders in New Zealand and the UK.
The role will involve developing and delivering an effective strategy that identifies market opportunities for UK companies in priority sectors such as Infrastructure and Energy. There will be a need to work in close collaboration with the DBT teams based in Australia to deliver DBT priorities and contribute to the achievement of export outcomes.
The trade team in Auckland works closely with the British High Commission in Wellington on the UK’s trade and prosperity agenda. The job holder will be required to collaborate and liaise with the High Commission visits team in Wellington on visits, programmes and prosperity work.
You will report to the Director of Trade and Investment (NZ) and be part of a small and friendly team and will be comfortable leading on work with limited supervision.
The jobholder may be required to operate outside of their role should there be a crisis affecting the UK and NZ, such as a natural disaster, which requires the British High Commission to suspend some or all of usual business.

The successful candidate will join a team of over 40 trade and investment experts across ANZ, working across two diplomatic missions in New Zealand as part of the UK’s network in the wider Asia Pacific region of over 200 people in 22 locations.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?
This role will primarily work to achieve DBT’s Trade and Investment goals in New Zealand and the wider ANZ and Asia Pacific region. In addition to working in collaborative ANZ teams you will also work regularly with UK-based colleagues. Your ability to work at pace in a complex stakeholder environment will be key to your success.
The ability to build and establish strong relationships with the business community, government agencies and industry multipliers to actively support and leverage commercial opportunities will be viewed favourably.

Strategy
Working collaboratively with sector teams across Australia and New Zealand the job holder will need to develop and deliver a strategic engagement plan to establish and maintain relationships with key stakeholders in market that will benefit UK companies doing business in New Zealand.
Market Entry Guidance
Contribute to export win targets through the identification of and engagement with export ready UK companies. This will require you to meet and brief UK businesses independently on the New Zealand market and assist with the development of market entry strategies. Accurate and up to date records and reporting in data management platforms will need to be maintained.
Key Account Management
Regular and meaningful engagement with British Businesses operating in key sectors to provide support for their market development plans.
Project & Event Delivery
Represent the UK Government and be the project lead at various events in the NZ market, providing event management delivery where required. As the role will require attendance at events throughout New Zealand, and potentially further afield, some flexibility for working out of hours may be required. Track, evaluate and report on outcomes of activities.
Market Research
Conduct business research, produce sector reports, evaluate and disseminate business opportunities and market intelligence to support UK firms make informed decisions about opportunities in the agreed sectors.
Contribution to Auckland Consulate and whole UK Government Priorities
On occasion you will be asked to contribute to the UK governments’ broader priorities in NZ such as assisting with VIP visit programmes.

The job holder will have a small budget for business activity and travel and will work with marketing colleagues on managing relevant activities.
