In line with the Europe Regional Trade Plan aim to grow British exports to Europe, DIT is recruiting a Export Growth Adviser to join its team working in the British Consulate General in Milan.

The new position will report directly to the Deputy Consul General as part of the Operations team and will work closely with a pilot regional enquiry hub and with DIT’s export support network in the UK to identify and drive high potential British exporters, including innovative SMEs such as AI tech, Fintech and Mid-Sized Businesses (MSBs) into supply chains in Italy. A core element of the role will be to deliver practical support to those companies, including information on market potential, in-market representation and clients. The job holder will also work proactively with the enquiry hub and with the UK regional network to communicate high value opportunities to business, in areas aligned to UK industrial strengths, as part of an innovative promotional programme.

In parallel, the job holder will seek to expand networks of commercial partners in Italy, including private sector providers of commercial services. As with all DIT positions, there will be a focus on working collaboratively with colleagues across the Italy network team - on policy, science & innovation and outreach - to maximise opportunities for the UK. The work will be varied and demanding and the successful candidate will need to be a flexible, committed self-starter, able to juggle priorities and to work on demanding timelines.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Support the Europe enquiry hub pilot in delivering commercial services, guidance, information and support to high potential British exporters – including innovative small companies, entrepreneurs and MSBs.

  • Help to create and maintain strong and mutually-beneficial relationships with DIT’s export support network in the UK to identify, target and engage a pipeline of high potential clients.

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across Europe to ensure a comprehensive and joined-up approach that maximises the returns for high potential exporters – using success in one European market as a springboard to success in another.

  • Help to build in-market networks and partnerships able to provide commercial services, guidance, information and support alongside DIT teams.

  • Contribute to efforts to communicate opportunities in the European market through support for an imaginative regional promotional programme.

  • Maintain excellent databases and records to facilitate and encourage collaboration and to measure success.

  • Excellent Italian and English language skills (written and spoken) are required. Fluency (Oral and Written) in both English and Italian (C1 level or above under the CEFRL or equivalent).

  • Great IT skills, especially Word, PowerPoint and Excel, are necessary.

  • Customer focus: a concern for quality and drive for continuous improvement in the service provided.

  • Good project management, including an eye for detail, to ensure that all aspects of service delivery are thought through carefully.

  • Excellent communication skills to work well with commercial clients, external contacts and a wide and diverse Europe team.

  • Drive and enthusiasm combined with the ability to deliver, working as part of a team.

  • Resourcefulness and ability to act on own initiative, with an ability to find creative solutions when the unexpected occurs.

  • Proven Commercial experience required.

This is a full-time temporary position with a contract of 12 months, graded at A2 as per the FCO grading structure. The contract will be reviewed towards the end of the term with a possibility of extending for an additional 12 months.

The monthly gross salary is Euro 2.213.00 The salary is paid monthly 14 times per year including € 10.33 EDR paid 13 times per year. Working hours are 35 hrs per week Monday to Friday, normally from 09.00-17.00. Some degree of flexibility is expected.

The job requires occasional travel within Italy and outside.

Confirmation of the job is subject to a four month probation and the successful completion of a security clearance and references check process.

All staff employed by the British Consulate General are subject to Italian income tax rate deductions (IRPEF). However the administration of these tax payments will vary depending on nationality.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Italian State Social Security Scheme.

Staff recruited locally by the British Consulate General Milan are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Italian employment law.

Visa/passport requirements: Must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Italy and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check and security clearance.
