Introduction

The British Embassy in Jakarta is part of a world-wide network of 230 Diplomatic Posts, representing British political, economic, commercial and consular interests overseas. Based within the embassy, Department for International Trade (DIT) has overall responsibility for promoting UK trade across the world and attracting foreign investment to our shores.  DIT’s key priorities are:

  • Promote UK exports of goods and services, to support a growing economy that creates wealth for all, supports jobs and meets our wider national interests;
  • Deliver the best international trading framework for the UK outside the EU, including through building our capacity to negotiate and administer a national trade policy;
  • Maximise opportunities for wealth creation through supporting Foreign Direct Investment, with a renewed focus on outward FDI (overseas direct investment) to support the Current Account;
  • Through UK Export Finance, to ensure that no viable UK export fails for lack of finance and insurance

Main purpose of job:

Proactively drive trade promotion activity on education and support wider UK Government objectives, including trade policy/market access, inward and outward investment, UK Export Finance and Overseas Development Assistance programmes (e.g., Prosperity Fund).   

Main duties:

  • Identify and promote business opportunities in Indonesia for UK firms in the education sectors for UK businesses through targeted sales and marketing campaigns
  • Provide assistance and advice to individual UK companies, including research, event management, advice on procurement processes and market access, and introductions to government. 
  • Proactively identify synergies between trade promotion and wider DIT objectives, including   trade policy/market access, investment and UK Export Finance.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Understand the UK Government’s Regional Trade Plan for Asia Pacific and  UK Industrial Strategy and support DIT’s Senior Trade and Investment Manager to develop local sector strategies that will help deliver UK Government’s objectives
  • Support DIT’s Country Director and  Senior Trade and Investment Manager   to pursue opportunities to increase UK participation in Indonesia’s President plan to increase human capital through education. 
  • Identify,  priortise and capture education market access issues and then work with colleagues to address them, as approprioate 
  • Proactively build relationships with embassy colleagues to proactively identify synergies between trade promotion and wider UK Government objectives, including   trade policy, investment,  UK Export Finance and Overseas Development Assistance programmes (e.g., Prosperity Fund) 
  • Develop DIT’s pipeline of education projects in Indonesia by developing and recording market intelligence through research, company visits, relationship management of Indonesian buyers and meetings with relevant officials and stakeholders
  • Relationship manage and provide in market support for UK education companies, which have both the capability and appetite to secure contracts in DIT’s pipeline of education projects
  • Share updates,  knowledge and insights with colleagues in Indonesia, Asia pacific and UK and collaborate on shared objectives, as appropriate
  • Develop sector knowledge, both of UK capability (supply) and Indonesian requirenments (demand)
  • Work with the British Chamber of Commerce, British Council and embassy colleagues to plan and deliver activities, including inward and outward missions, seminars, exhibition groups and workshops, including high-level Ministerial and senior official visits
  • Work with the DIT /Embassy marketing teams to disseminate information of interest to Indonesian and UK stakeholders through a range of media
  • To plan and coordinate activities for Education is GREAT in country ensuring they are align to the regional campaign priorities

Other information

  • Some evening and weekend work is required on occasion. Embassy Standard Terms and Conditions apply and provide for time outside of working hours to be compensated through Time Of In Lieu.
  • The jobs  involve  travel, including to the UK, regionally and within  Indonesia. A willingness and ability to travel is required. 
  • We are looking for a minimum two year commitment from the successful candidate 
  • Fluent in both spoken and written Bahasa Indonesia
  • Fluent in both spoken and written English
  • A degree plus at least two - five years experience of working in a relevant role such as procurement, sales, management, marketing, trade promotion or business development;
  • Events and project management skills and experience delivering results against deadlines/targets;
  • A proven track record of successful relationship management with  high-level stakeholders and international clients;
  • Ability to provide oral and written briefings, produce meeting notes and undertake regular email and phone based communications;
  • Strong knowledge in IT applications and MS Windows;
  • Evidence of self-motivation, professionalism and the ability to work under minimal supervision;
  • Evidence of adaptability and ability to prioritise against competing, challenging tasking;
  • Ability to work within a medium sized team.
  • Sector knowledge relevant to the roles, specifically education
  • Corporate Business Development, Sales or Marketing experience would be highly advantageous;
  • Familiarity with the UK is not required, but could be an advantage;
  • Market research and analysis experience would be helpful but not essential;
  • Experience managing staff
