Main purpose of job

At a crucial time for the UK’s reputation globally, this is a new, exciting role that will help to further develop the UK’s strong reputation across the Americas.

Working to the Head of Campaigns (Americas), you will be responsible for leading and embedding a new, audience-centric, insight-driven, innovative and value-added approach within the Americas Network. You will work to align messages delivered by HMG internationally to ensure a consistent vision of a truly Global Britain and increase the positive impact of our communication in countries across the region.

We are looking for a media and campaigns manager with experience in planning, designing and delivering high-profile campaigns that are engaging and influencing, and support delivery of wider HMG policy and business objectives.

You will be enthusiastic and proactive; able to spot thematic links; engage with geographically dispersed teams and stakeholders; and take effective and informed decisions based on sound judgement, in-depth knowledge and evidence drawn from audience insight. With a knowledge of the Latin America communications landscape and a keen eye for emerging communications trends, you will have a passion for sharing your strong communications skills with, and motivating, others.

Occasional travel across the region and to the UK may be required.

Roles and responsibilities

  • As part of the Regional Communications Hub (RCH) in Mexico City, work with Heads of Communications and Heads of Mission across the region to deliver strategic media and digital communications campaigns under the Global Britain umbrella. In charge of planning regional campaigns that support UK government priorities, ensuring high quality implementation and evaluation.
  • Lead the identification and management of campaigns risks. Identify compelling stories for media and digital communications that will advance our Global Britain objectives, working closely with policy colleagues in London and across the HMG Americas Network.
  • Work with country leads to ensure that they adopt an insight-led approach to HMG communications by promoting the use of a toolkit of assets, training materials and other resources (e.g. perception studies) that will embed consistency across the network. The jobholder will make sure that Heads of Communications use these insights and information to plan their local campaigns in line with FCO standards. Encourage and support them to build and develop their own local methods.
  • Lead the development of innovative and low-cost communication techniques, using insight and benchmarking best practice from other Government departments and external organisations.
  • Work with the Head of the Team and other senior level decision-makers to develop effective programmes that will support the upskilling of communicators across HMG’s Americas Network. In line with the latest Government Communication Service learning and development programmes, identify gaps in campaign planning, audience insight and evaluation skills within the region.

The role is subject to change as the Network and requirements evolve.

  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent professional qualification in communications, marketing or similar.
  • At least 5 years’ professional experience in media, communications or PR, with demonstrable experience of developing and implementing high profile and effective campaigns.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, including stakeholder engagement skills to build credibility with senior stakeholders as well as colleagues within the UK government network.
  • Excellent organisational and self-management skills to respond effectively to tight – and changing – deadlines and priorities.

  • Excellent editorial judgment and ability to communicate effectively with different audiences.
