The Department for Work and Pensions’ (DWP) Counter Fraud and Compliance Directorate (CFCD) in partnership with the British Consular network in Spain is looking for an Intelligence Gathering Officer to join their innovative and dynamic team for a fixed period of one year based at the British Consulate in Madrid or Alicante. 

The successful candidate will join a small team of Intelligence Gathering Officers in Spain working as part of a larger UK- based International Fraud Team whose joint objective is to fight benefit fraud overseas.

The role of an Intelligence Gathering Officer is varied and fast-paced and we encourage creativity and the ability to work autonomously. As an Intelligence Gathering Officer the main purpose of your role will be to support ongoing UK investigations into benefit fraud committed overseas through the gathering of intelligence from our ever-growing network of established sources and contacts located around the world.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Gather intelligence from our network of established sources around the world to support ongoing investigations into cases of suspected UK benefit fraud overseas.
  • Analyse and process intelligence received and share accordingly with UK colleagues, adhering to relevant data protection laws.
  • Liaise with foreign authorities to establish and maintain current intelligence sources.
  • Receive and process fraud allegations from the public via the Benefit Fraud Hotline in Spain;
  • Assist in the delivery of the team´s communications plan, aiming to prevent fraud and generate case referrals;
  • Record all casework accurately and keep paper and electronic files up to date and organised;
  • Assist in the recording and gathering of statistical information in order to measure and demonstrate success and value for money;
  • Provide general support to the team in the delivery of the annual Country Business Plan.

  • Minimum of 3 years proven work experience, preferably in office administration and from governmental sector;
  • Excellent attention to detail, strong analytical perspective and problem solving skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, demonstrating the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders both in the UK and overseas;
  • Ability to work autonomously, prioritise work and have good organisational skills;
  • Fluency in English and Spanish as both languages will be necessary on a daily basis;
  • Good IT skills (in particular a working knowledge of MS Word and Excel).
  • University Degree;
  • Knowledge of a third language, in particular Polish, Slovak, German or Greek;
  • Experience of influencing and engaging key stakeholders and local authorities;
  • Experience of communications work and drafting press articles.

This is a full-time temporary contract of 12 months. The working hours are 37.5 hours per week.

The successful candidate is subject to a confirmation of a background check, security clearance and the successful completion of a probationary period.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Spanish Social Security Scheme and will therefore not be entitled to any gratuity from the Embassy based on gross annual salary.

The Embassy is a Diplomatic Mission with tax exempt status and does not collect taxes for other States. Employees are fully responsible for payment of income tax at the legally required rate. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Spain are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Spanish employment law.

Visa / Passport requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Spain and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
