Science and Innovation

Main purpose of job:

The goal of the Science & Innovation team is to contribute to maintaining and improving the quality and impact of UK science and innovation. The purpose of this role is to increase UK-Japan scientific and innovation collaboration (including access to Japanese expertise and equipment), support UK technology based trade and investment, and learn from Japan’s science and innovation policies and strengths to improve UK policy. The specific scientific topics at any point will vary depending on UK priorities, but cover the full spectrum of natural, life, physical and social sciences. You will support the team to deliver projects, promote investment and trade, provide research, undertake team administration and support the wider Japan Network.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

Increase UK-Japan scientific and innovation collaboration in priority scientific fields by supporting the Senior Science and Innovation Officer to engage with UK and Japanese stakeholders, develop plans and deliver projects, including workshops and seminars. You will work across the Japan Network and support the team to collaborate with a wide range of key stakeholders in Japanese ministries, funding agencies, institutions and the wider scientific community.

Support UK technology innovation and tech-based trade and investment by working in collaboration with teams in the Department for International Trade (DIT) to identify opportunities for UK technology-based exports to Japan. Help to promote the UK as an investment destination based on scientific excellence. You will support the Senior Science and Innovation Officer on practical outcomes for export and investment for DIT and to work towards UK R&D investment objectives.

Provide research and data on Japan’s scientific and innovation developments, in collaboration with other teams and in response to SIN and UK Government commissions. You will develop knowledge of Japan’s science and innovation policies, translating where needed, to report developments, opportunities and lessons for the UK and for public information. You will monitor the team’s impact via data on engagement and partnerships and proactive feedback from stakeholders.

Contribute to the wider work of the Japan network, including taking an active role in the crisis response plan and participating in crisis exercises. You will collaborate with the wider Japan Network as needed, particularly during Network-wide events, and accompany major visits to the UK where appropriate.

Team administration including tasks such as budget management, procurement duties, monitoring impact of activity and logistical support, being willing to flex tasks as necessary for the smooth running of the team.

  • Ability to complete tasks independently and develop and deliver plans.
  • Experience of working in a business or international environment and/or with senior figures.
  • Good communication and organisational skills.
  • Interest in learning about the UK.
  • Communications or marketing experience.
  • Ability to handle technical and numerical information.
  • Working knowledge or interest in developing knowledge in a range of scientific technological fields.

Language:  English and Japanese

Level of language required:

  • Fluent Japanese language skills (JLPT level 1 or equivalent).
  • Fluent or Business level English (IELTS band 7 or TOEIC 875 points or above or equivalent), with experience of working in an English speaking environment.

The British Embassy / Consulate-General and UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office provides a range of training opportunities in core diplomatic and commercial skills, from networking and communication to project management. The British Embassy / Consulate-General works closely with missions across the Asia-Pacific region to share experience and learning. Working within the Science and Innovation Section presents an opportunity to learn about UK and Japanese science and innovation and also be part of the Global UK Science and Innovation Network. 

Alongside a number of specific courses that will need to be completed on arrival, the Embassy / Consulate-General is supportive of learning and development. We offer five development days per year, and regular opportunities for learning and development delivered both within the mission and regionally in Asia. We also focus on using coaching and a buddying system to support new arrivals.

All staff are required to take a role in the embassy’s crisis preparation and response. Full training will be provided for this and regular opportunities will be available to test and develop your skills.
