Main purpose of job:

To promote and deliver science and innovation collaboration between the UK and India. To engage with relevant UK and Indian stakeholders in government, academia and business to promote new engagement and identify future potential opportunities.

To lead the work of the UK Science and Innovation Network (SIN) in Mumbai. To communicate the impact of that team’s work to senior stakeholders in Mumbai, across India and in London and to influence colleagues to maintain their commitment to our work.

Roles and responsibilities 

You will play a key role in the UK’s India Science and Innovation Network, which has teams based in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. You must be scientifically literate with the credibility to influence both Indian and UK partners.

Reporting: To lead the work of SIN India on one or more thematic areas (likely to include energy research focusing specifically on electric vehicles and battery storage technologies). You will be expected to develop a deep knowledge of these sectors – who are the best researchers, where are they based, what are their plans and what research are Indian funding parties (including business and philanthropy) are interested in taking forward. An ability to assimilate all this information into concise reports and deliver oral briefings that meet the needs of a UK audience will be key.

Collaboration: You will develop collaborations at the level of both individual companies / institutions as well as research funders. You will be responsible for making introductions between UK and Indian partners, facilitating conversations and events, and connecting researchers with other sources of support, all in order to deliver high quality research and innovation collaborations.

Influence: You will be expected to influence both UK and Indian policy makers and opinion formers in order to ensure the work of the SIN delivers tangible change. You will share examples of best practice, scientific evidence and policy experience to help further UK goals. 

Communication: You will champion your team’s work and share evidence in written and oral communications with colleagues around India, in London and the rest of the world. You may be required to write blog pieces, speak at public events and brief senior officials and Ministers.

Management: You will manage one member of staff.

Learning and development opportunities 

The India SIN is part of a regional network including Africa and the Gulf and the network comes together to share best practice and experience.  With the job will come opportunities to travel across India, to the UK and potentially 3rd countries.

You will have opportunities to meet with leading scientific institutions and funding organisations as well as to understand how UK government operates and makes decisions.

In addition there will be a range of regional learning and development opportunities.

  • Senior S&I Advisers will typically be qualified to Masters level and have experience of working in either a research or technology focused corporate environment.
  • Applicants will be expected to be able to demonstrate a wide understanding of the Indian science and innovation system and demonstrate credibility in that community.
  • Experience of working in an international organisation.
  • Experience of working with academia, business and government organisations.
  • Knowledge of the UK’s science and innovation strengths and an ability to demonstrate practical experience of programme management will all be advantageous.
