The British High Commission in Singapore is recruiting an Investment Manager to join the Department for International Trade (DIT) to promote, attract, retain and increase investments from Singapore into the UK. This position is an exciting opportunity for an outgoing, proactive and creative individual to make an impact on the Singapore-UK commercial relationship.

You will be an integral member of a three person investment team, reporting to the Head of Inward Investment and working with an Investment Officer. 

You will play a key role in supporting DIT Singapore achieve its objectives of promoting UK opportunities and driving  foreign direct investment (FDI) and capital investment from Singapore into the UK.

DIT works closely with other key UK Government departments, including Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), and the economic development agencies from the devolved administrative regions: Invest Northern Ireland (INI), Scottish Development International (SDI), and Trade and Invest Wales (TIW), to support business and the UK Government’s wider objectives.

Achieving Objectives

With the support of the Investment Officer:

  • map-out and maintain a list of target FDI companies (new and existing), prepare engagement plans for lead generation and business development activities,
  • focus on Singaporean companies from the financial services and technology sectors, and maintain a watching brief on the healthcare tech sector and other potential emerging sectors of interest,
  • identify and deliver high value FDI projects from Singapore into the UK as well as encouraging growth of Singaporean companies with an existing presence in the UK,
  • develop, plan and deliver a campaign of focused activity and engagement for the financial year, encompassing meetings, seminars, and events, to articulate compelling investment opportunities, and ensuring that these plans are executed to the highest standards and
  • ensure delivery process is aligned with the investment “playbook”.

Assist the Head of Investment to:

  • deliver capital investment projects into the UK,
  • prepare meeting briefings,
  • present regular updates on investment activities and performance to the senior management in DIT Singapore and the High Commission and
  • prepare sector deep dive briefings to inform High Commission of investment strategy.

Relationship & Account Management

  • Develop a deep network of DIT’s key stakeholders: sector specialists (e.g. financial services team, technology team, and business environment advisory team), regional partners (e.g. INI and SDI), delivery partners, marketing and communication teams, and departments across the High Commission and UK Government.
  • Collaborate closely with key stakeholders to ensure alignment with the whole of UK Government approach to supporting the broader Singapore-UK agenda.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with Singaporean target companies, existing investors and multipliers. Use those relationships to develop a deep understanding of their business / international plans and priorities.
  • Continually and proactively expand professional network by participating in relevant sector-focused events.
  • Maintain consistent recording of meetings, interactions and business intelligence on DIT’s CRM system, and ensure follow-ups with companies are undertaken in a timely manner.

Strategy Development

  • Actively contribute to annual strategy setting.
  • Horizon scan for new investment opportunities in emerging sectors.
  • Develop tailored approaches to promote different aspects of investment and finding the most impactful way to deliver investment objectives.

Learning and Development

  • Build-up knowledge and understanding of the UK’s FDI sectors, policy messages, the UK capability, and UK / Singapore business environment, as well as the business models of Singaporean target companies, investor profiles, Singapore’s growth sectors and government support.
  • Commit to continual learning and personal / professional development, as well as formal training for skills and personal competencies most relevant to the job.
  • Demonstrate ability to understand diverse business models and identify areas of potential strategic partnerships and growth.
  • Successful track record and experience in lead generation, business development and sales (including market research, analysis, account management and delivery).
  • Strong track record of team work and collaboration experience leading to commercial outcomes.
  • Excellent communication (written and oral) and networking / relationship building skills.
  • Proven organisational, planning and presentation experience.
  • Ability to work at pace, prioritise tasks and work independently to delivery high quality outcomes while meeting deadlines.
  • Possess a proactive, agile and can-do approach.
  • Have confidence in suggesting new ideas and influencing change.
  • Competent using Excel and Power Point.
  • Broad understanding of technology sectors, particularly the financial services and healthcare tech sectors.
  • Holds a bachelor honours degree in business studies or economic studies.
  • Experience working with local / national government.
  • Experience working in the financial services sector or healthcare tech sector.

We offer a competitive package, which includes basic salary of SGD4,359 per month and annual wage supplement [an additional 2 months’ salary paid out in December each year], 23-day annual leave entitlement and medical insurance plan.
