The British Embassy in Paris is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. It is also part of the UK’s France Network (including offices in Lyon, Bordeaux and Marseilles and representation to international organisations in Paris (OECD and UNESCO) and Strasbourg (CoE).

The British Embassy is currently looking for a Development Policy Officer to work in Paris. The main purpose of the job is to promote the UK’s development interests at the OECD while identifying and harnessing evidence from OECD work to assist UK policy making. Support the Head of the Development Team in delivering UK priorities at the Development Assistance Committee and Development Centre, representing the UK when required.

Main responsibilities

  • Provide up-to-date information to UK government departments, discussing priority areas for involvement, influencing programme of work plans and linking the work of different OECD directorates.
  • Support the UK Development Counsellor on development policy areas, including through UK representation at meetings, briefing and preparing for high-level development meetings. Contribute to cross-delegation projects, including promotion of UK and OECD development policy work on Delegation’s social media outputs, providing assistance during visits and events, and supporting learning and development activities. Assist with programme management of UK development projects at OECD.
  • Lead on the UK’s engagement with the Development Centre. Build relationships and networks with key influencers in the Secretariat and other delegations in order to be informed on important developments and undertake lobbying where required. Have oversight of the OECD’s response to the 2030 Agenda ensuring the UK is well positioned to respond.
  • Manage the Delegation’s annual budget by working closely with the Embassy’s corporate services team and reporting to the Deputy Head of Mission on the current financial position and forecast. Lead on submission of the Delegation’s Financial Plans.
  • Self starter with strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to show evidence of collaborating and working in a team.
  • Ability to deliver at pace and prioritise well are essential.
  • Previous academic or professional experience of working in international development.
  • Proficient oral and written English.
  • Basic/Fluent level of oral and written French.
  • Knowledge of the UK government and the OECD would be useful.
  • Experience of working in development or an academic qualification in international development.
  • Experience in managing a budget
  • Basic programme management knowledge would be an asset.

This is a Full-time position for a permanent contract (CDI). Working hours per week are 35 from 09.30-18.00.

All appointments are subject to professional background check and satisfactory security clearance.

The successful candidate will be required to provide a copy of his/her passport or national identity card for all nationalities held, an up-to-date criminal record (casier judiciaire) for recent countries of residence (which can be obtained online at www.justice.gouv.fr/cjn/), two written proofs of address (utility invoices and/or bank statements) and two references.
