Main purpose of job:

Provide administrative support to the DIT (Department for International Trade) Commercial Section at the British Consulate-General Rio de Janeiro.

The selected candidate will support the DIT Senior Management team on the challenging role to help increase bilateral trade and investment between Brazil and the United Kingdom. The successful candidate will also provide support to the Head of Trade in Rio de Janeiro and Business Support Manager with administrative tasks.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in commercial meetings, missions, internal and external events in order to develop professional skills and experience to enhance future career prospects.


Roles and responsibilities:

  • Supporting the DIT Commercial team with logistics in trips, missions, internal and external meetings;
  • Supporting the DIT Senior Management team with internal meetings, CRM tool, and administrative tasks in general;
  • Accompanying meetings with Brazilian and UK partners, both virtually and in person;
  • Producing and reviewing internal briefings, documents and agendas;
  • Providing support on the organisation of events (trade missions and fairs), official visits, seminars and workshops, if needed;
  • Supporting with finance reports on team’s expenses; and light data analysis
  • Devote some time to support Marketing and Communications activities (Newsletters, Social Media)
  • Keep the team’s folders, documents, systems, and spreadsheets stored in an organised manner
  • Ad hoc duties as necessary (e.g., photocopies, setting up and accompanying meetings, escorting visitors within the building, etc.).

Essential on arrival:

  • Essential on arrival: Undergraduate Student, preferably in International Relations, Business, International Commerce, Marketing, Economics or other related areas.
  • The student must also be flexible, dynamic and pro-active. Excellent command of written and spoken English and Portuguese, and excellent communication and presentation skills with both languages. Knowledge in Microsoft Office package. Good research and report writing skills

Language requirements: 

Language: English and Portuguese

Level of language required: Advanced or Fluent 

Desirable on arrival:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, team player, quick learner are desirable skills.
  • Previous experience in working for diplomatic mission and/or in organising events is an advantage.

Learning and development opportunities:

  • The Department for International Trade encourages staff development through interns programme, shadowing with colleagues and an effective development plan.  
  • Essential HMG training will be given at the beginning of the Internship, with on-the-job training available throughout.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.

Working patterns:

If the job is suitable for flexible working patterns, please provide details: 30 hours a week, no more than 6 hours per day, usually with starting and finishing times at 09:00 and 16:00.
