Communications, Press and Media

Support effective delivery of the British Embassy communications strategy to maximise public impact of UK priority issues in Paraguay. Support the Public Diplomacy Officer during engagements with key stakeholders in government (e.g., BECAL, MEC), within the media and civil society. Support the Public Diplomacy Officer throughout the Chevening scholarships process and outreach activities and contribute to broader Embassy priority work.

Roles and responsibilities 

Communications

  • Support the design and implementation of BE Asuncion’s communications strategy.
  • Support the Public Diplomacy Officer in managing the Embassy’s social media accounts and creating content.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with media, including the organisation of interviews and press conferences, with oversight from the Public Diplomacy Officer.
  • Support in the drafting and publication of official Embassy press releases.
  • Traditional and digital media monitoring and research to help identify public relations and marketing opportunities for the Embassy.
  • Assist in the design and production of promotional material for circulation at activities and events such as invitations, brochures, banners, videos, etc.

Chevening

  • Support delivery of the Chevening programme objectives in Paraguay, including identifying potential funding partners.
  • Supporting delivery of the Chevening application, interview and selection processes.
  • Deputise for the Public Diplomacy Officer in interviews when necessary.
  • Support the coordination of activities with Chevening Alumni Association.
  • Identify potential stakeholders and support the Public Diplomacy Officer in developing and maintain a network of key contacts.
  • Support the promotion of the Chevening program through university fairs, marketing in the media and helping coordinate and deliver Chevening tours.

Other

  • Line management of intern(s) as required.
  • Support the embassy through corporate responsibilities, such as handling general enquiries (phone calls, emails and walk-ins) to the Embassy, handling diplomatic bags or covering for the PA to the Ambassador when required.
  • Support the delivery of cross-embassy soft power, events and cultural activities such as the annual British Week or King’s Birthday Party (national day celebration).
  • Support the delivery of Ministerial and senior officials’ visits.
  • Level of language required: Fluent written and spoken English and Spanish

Must have the legal status to live and work in Paraguay. Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.

  • Strong drafting skills in both English and Spanish.

The British Embassy in Asuncion is committed to learning and development and there is a range of training on offer for the successful applicant to support their work in the embassy.

Working within the Embassy team you would be expected to participate in wider Embassy learning and to complete mandatory training on performance management and security. Travel within Paraguay is expected as part of the role, to support Chevening scholarship outreach and to accompany senior management during visits requiring external communications. The successful candidate may also have the opportunity to travel regionally or internationally (depending on business need).

Working patterns

This is a full-time role, with regular conditioned hours of 09:00-17:30 from Monday to Thursday and 09:00-13:00 on Friday.

The British Embassy in Asuncion offers flexible working patterns, including options to work from home with line management approval within the embassy flexible working policy. The successful candidate may be asked to help with occasional evening/weekend engagements based on need, with appropriate compensation provide as per embassy policy.

 

The British Embassy in Asuncion is a small, but friendly team, with most staff filling multiple roles. Flexibility and teamwork are essential.

Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list’. If during the reserve period of 6-12 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.
