This network provides a platform for approximately 30 Government departments and agencies to conduct their work in the United States and is made up of over 900 staff with a rich and diverse background, skill sets, and experiences.

This role will support the British Consul General‘s work supporting the cross-government team in Miami and Orlando.  The aims of the Consulate are to build political relationships, promote trade and investment links, protect and promote British interests / security, and seek to build and develop relationships between Florida, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands and the United Kingdom.

The candidate will be exposed to and develop relationships with senior political, business, defence, law enforcement and academic leaders. This person will utilise key analytical skills and be at the centre of the work of this high profile and busy diplomatic mission. This position will involve administrative duties, but will also develop initiative, strategy and policy.  

The ideal candidate will be organised, have a strong attention to detail and be able to communicate effectively with the diverse set of Departments and individuals we have on the platform.  Confidence when dealing with senior external contacts would also be a benefit.

Roles and responsibilities

  • Support to the Consul-General

Manage the CG’s diary and inbox, prioritising enquiries, invitations and delegating work /seeking answers proactively. Secure timely briefings / prepare speeches and presentations. Maintain the CG’s contact database and other records. Accompany the CG to important meetings, document, identify action points and ensure follow up.  Co-ordinate meetings; confirm attendance, book rooms, take notes and circulate action points. Assist Consulate General business planning by coordinating input to reports and special projects as they arise.  Support on budget and financial profiling.

  • Strategic Calendar / Contact Management

Liaise across the Consulate, develop and maintain a strategic engagement programme for key meetings and travel, prioritising who the CG should meet and why.  

  • Visit Management

Arrange detailed programmes for incoming senior visitors by scheduling transport, accommodation, appointments with high-level contacts, working with internal and external stakeholders as appropriate.  Lead officer in briefing material, including Ministerial level.  Ensure content is accurate and of the quality required that will convey key points and knowledge to prepare the visitor for meetings in a timely and effective manner.  Organise formal events, including at the CG’s Official Residence – working with the Residence Manager and managing invitations.   Attend events and support the CG in developing contacts.

  • Crisis/Emergency Management

Participate in crisis training and exercising and be part of the Consulate-wide team response in the event of a crisis.

  • Administrative Support

Offer administrative support to the CG (and from Sept 2023 a newly arrived Deputy CG); completing claims, making travel / hotel bookings, logistical support to larger events / projects. Support the Corporate Services team with requisitions and receipts of goods and services.


Under US State Department requirements, the UK Government in the US may only employ, as non-diplomatic staff, persons who are US citizens, US Permanent Residents or A visa holders with EAD cards*. Knowledge

  • A strong interest in politics, international, defence and security affairs and/or international trade.  Experience in a similar role would also be beneficial.  Demonstrated interest in, and understanding of, working in the public sector.

 Other skills and experience

  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, sound judgement, common sense and the ability to remain calm and composed under pressure.
  • Strong interpersonal skills - a team player with the ability to work with others and integrate fully into a wider network.
  • A record of academic achievement or previous professional experience relevant to the work of a diplomatic mission.
  • I.T. competency.
  • Experience of event management.
