Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (Programme Roles)

Climate change and environment are the most important areas of collaboration between Mexico and the UK. These sectors acquire additional relevance in the context of Mexico’s newly published NDC. The successful candidate will have the chance to contribute with the implementation of a series of new and existing initiatives designed to support Her Majesty’s Government objectives in Mexico, providing strategic support to the team to promote the transition to a low carbon economy and the successful delivery of COP26.                                                         

This is an exciting and challenging position, which covers a wide range of policy and project related tasks as well as administrative and logistic tasks. It will involve contact with most sections of the Embassy and a range of external contacts in Mexico and the UK. We often work under time pressure in a fast-paced environment, offering above market learning and development opportunities.


  • Carry out research to support the team’s policy analysis and reporting tasks.
  • Lead on and contribute to drafting a series of briefings and reports for stakeholders in Mexico and London, both in English and Spanish.
  • Support in designing programmes for official visits sponsored by the Embassy, outlining the content and assisting on logistics.
  • Manage the team’s stakeholder database and climate team microsites, guaranteeing they are   up to date and user-friendly.
  • Liaise with Press and Communication colleagues to support the team’s communication strategy for disseminating the results of various events and publications.
  • Provide administrative and logistics support for the team’s daily tasks and events.
  • Represent the Embassy in external meetings and report to the team as required.
  • Represent the team in internal Embassy meetings and report back as required.

  • Genuine interest in international cooperation, particularly in the areas of climate change, energy, biodiversity and nature.
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to facilitate relationship with a wide range of stakeholders;
  • Proactive, able to learn quickly and work under pressure with minimum supervision;
  • IT literate;
  • Strong problem solving abilities;
  • Flexibility for hybrid work at home (est. 33%) and office (est. 66%);
  • Strong analytic capabilities;
  • Experience and interest in communication strategies;
  • Proactive and able to prioritise and plan among different tasks;
  • Language: fluent in both English and Spanish including good writing skills;
  • Candidates must be able to live and work in Mexico in their own right. The successful candidate will be subject to a security clearance and professional reference checks.

 

  • Currently studying a university degree level in International Relations, Political Science, Economy Climate/ Energy or biodiversity sciences or similar fields;
  • Social media savvy;
  • Project management and event management experience.
  • Experience working with international institutions.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.  Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list’.  If during the reserve period of 6-12 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.
