Main purpose of job:

As Deputy Head of the DIT Japan Trade Team, you will work with the Head of Trade to lead and provide direction and pastoral support to a team of 20 staff; deputising for the Head of Trade where necessary, supporting cross-sector approach on areas such as income generation, external stakeholder management, staff capability and regional (cross Asia-Pacific) priorities etc. 

You will lead the Professional & Business Services (PBS) team (financial services, insurance, asset management, education), delivering a high-level programme of activity to increase UK exports to Japan through supporting UK businesses and banks to enter and grow in the Japanese market, and creating the right conditions for PBS exports through collaboration with key UK and Japan stakeholders across government, industry and civil society. You will work alongside a Japanese financial services specialist.

In the interim period before a fully-staffed team is created, you will identify business opportunities for UK companies in advance of Expo 2025 Osaka.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Act as Deputy Head of the Japan Trade Team, including motivating and developing staff;
  • Lead the Professional & Business Services Team of 2 staff, with direct line management of 1x A2. Build up strong relationships with the most important clients in the Professional and Business Services, including UK banks in Japan, Japanese banking institutions, FSA, The City of London;
  • Work closely with the Financial Services team in the Department for International Trade Headquarters in the UK, whose role is to support UK companies in the UK side, and the regional team in Singapore to respond to enquiries and provide specialist support;
  • Implement an effective account management approach with key businesses (both UK and Japanese);
  • Lead on business planning and sector strategy for PBS, taking into account changes in the Japanese market and how those link to opportunities for UK business;
  • Deploying strong organisational and project management techniques to deliver an ambitious programme of engagements and events over the course of each financial year, as well as presenting at some of these;
  • Develop innovative strategies for lead generation and work on an integrated marketing approach to the sector, including leading campaigns to raise the profile of the UK financial services;
  • Work closely with the Japan Network Economic & Financial Services Team to bring policy and market access issues through to commercial outcomes, and contribute to the organisation of relevant visits by the Lord Mayor of the City of London, Governor of Bank of England, etc.;
  • Support implementation of those aspects of the UK-Japan Free Trade Agreement that relate to financial services exports to Japan and support wider efforts to reduce barriers to entry to the Japanese market.

The Japan Network supports and promotes flexible working as a crucial part of our inclusive offering. This particular role allows for flexibility, for example in start and end times, working compressed hours, working remotely on one or a couple of days in a week, and the possibility of a job share arrangement, subject to agreement with management.

This role requires flexibility to sometimes work outside of conditioned hours e.g. during Ministerial visits and Embassy events.

  • Proven ability to work with business (either in the private sector or public sector)
  • Proven stakeholder relationship management skills
  • Proven ability to lead and manage a team

Language requirements:

  • Japanese and English Language ability
  • Level of language required:  (fluent in one and business level in the other)

 

  • Experience working in a cross-cultural environment
  • Experience or knowledge of the professional and business services in the UK or Japan beneficial;
  • Analytical / statistical background
  • Comfortable / experience in assessing import and export data to understand preference utilisation of the UK-Japan EPA across sectors and able to identify trends.
