Main purpose of job:

The Trade Policy and Market Access Support Officer will provide assistance to the newly created C5 Trade Policy Officer role on all aspects of the forthcoming trade review between Indonesia and the UK, including setting up meetings, gathering evidence, providing notes of meetings, support on the analysis of policy options and assisting in the provision of a final report on the trade policy review.

This will require working closely with the Embassy’s Department for International Trade (DIT) team and the wider Embassy.  Engagement with the Indonesian Government, UK business and British Government colleagues in the UK.  The job holder will also help the Trade Policy Officer draw together the various strands of market access work currently undertaken by the Embassy, including policy work and direct help given to UK companies operating in Indonesia/seeking to do business here.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

The post holder will:

  • Support the Trade Policy Officer in all aspects of the trade review, including ensuring that the views of British business are effectively captured.  Lead on setting up meetings and consultation processes with British businesses, the British Chamber and the Indonesian Government and assist in the compilation of the final review;
  • Assist the Trade Policy Officer with secondary research into the various options for a future trade agreement between the UK and Indonesia and provide analysis of the evidence collected during the review and support in drafting of the final review document.
  • Support the project management of all aspects of the review, including ensuring the project management plan and risk register are regularly updated. Interact with a wide range of stakeholders, including British companies, the British Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia, and trade policy colleagues in the UK
  • Assist the Trade Policy Officer to integrate market access work, to ensure that DIT and Prosperity team work streams are aligned and fit with the vision set out in HMG’s Asia-Pacific Regional Trade Plan.
  • Budget monitoring and profiling to ensure compliance with FCO financial processes.
  • Provide administrative support (e.g. booking in Embassy visitors, transport reservations, arranging meetings etc).

  • Fluent English (spoken and written)
  • A demonstrable knowledge of, and interest in, trade policy
  • Good communicator at all levels, spoken and written
  • Strong administration and organisation skills
  • Flexible and reactive to new issues and priorities
  • Ability to work at pace and prioritise, managing a sometimes heavy workload
  • Ability to liaise with and manage external stakeholder relationships
  • Experience in completing timely and accurate written information in English
  • IT proficiency – Using MS Office, Outlook and ability to learn FCO systems
  • Ability to travel within Indonesia and ASEAN
  • Keen interest in business and trade
  • Trade policy experience
  • Experience of operating in a multi-cultural working environment
