Political

Main purpose of job:

To lead on all detailed political and economic reporting across Gujarat and Rajasthan, providing analysis and commentary on key political and economic developments and leading personalities. In addition to lead on the entire range of post project work (scoping, planning, monitoring and delivery) reflecting Country priorities on Modern Slavery, Human Trafficking, Media Freedom and next generation leaders etc. utilising devolved funds and managing bids to the GBF and Prosperity Funds. To lead on all post press and communications work especially new devolved digital platforms @UKinAhmedabad, blogs, Instagram etc. including in the Guajarati language. Finally to support the DHC in the delivery of the post objectives and country strategy providing advice on political engagement, managing key visits and VIP visitors and liaison with key institutions, NGOs and personalities across both states.

Roles and responsibilities:

This role is being strengthened to reflect the addition of 3 new responsibilities a) the addition of the State of Rajasthan doubling the area of responsibility covered; b) the extension of project work to that state to double the number of projects and funds managed and c) an extended political analysis and communications role reporting directly to New Delhi; and taking full responsibility for the new devolved digital media platforms in Ahmedabad – twitter, blogs etc. especially in the Guajarati language.

The new full job description is -

Political Analysis and Reporting  

  • Develop contacts, strong relationships and relevance with political and Government stakeholders from all parties , Think Tanks, civil society organisations including NGOs and influential groups in Gujarat and Rajasthan
  • Frequent travel to key cities in both states to develop key links to support political and wider objectives.
  • To analyse political developments in both states and to provide written reporting to New Delhi, colleagues across the India network and teams in London.   

Economic Analysis and Reporting 

  • Develop contacts, strong relationships and relevance with key economic figures and institutions in Gujarat and Rajasthan.
  • To report on key economic developments and emerging issues (e.g. the success of the Gujarat Economic Model) to New Delhi, colleagues across the India network and teams in London.   

Project Management 

  • Identify and work with credible project deliverers, notably in the non-profit and academia sectors addressing issues relating to violence against women, LGBTIQ rights, Modern Slavery and the rights of minorities.
  • Develop projects under these priorities for funding under existing UK Government funding lines. (GBF and Prosperity Fund)
  • Oversight of and timely delivery of agreed projects through regular co-ordination with the external Partner;  working closely with colleagues from Post and New Delhi to maximise media coverage for the Deputy High Commission & the delivering organisation, the benefits of the work and for UK Government’s engagement.
  • Ensure relevant UK government project management principles and audit requirements are followed.  

Engaging India’s Next Generation 

  • Be the BDHC’s lead on developing our engagement with Indian’s next generation of talent and leadership. Implement initiatives for engagement, and work with the India Network in developing and maintaining a Next-Gen database.
  • Act as the lead on the promotion of Chevening Scholarships and Fellowships in Western India.
  • Liaise with and organise events for the Chevening Alumni, and in partnership with the British Council, and other alumni groups. 

Visit Management and Delivery 

  • Act as the Delivery Officer for visits assigned to the Political Officer – ensuring high quality programmes, briefings and outcome reporting.
  • To support the delivery of other visits, in particular political components such as meetings with the Chief Minister, state ministers and key players from academic/policy institutes.

Leadership 

As an experienced staff member, engage in corporate tasking ranging from combating Bullying, Harassment and Discrimination in the work place to assisting in the organisation of an annual Away Day.

Resources managed (staff and expenditure):

The job holder will not have direct management responsibilities.  However, they will contribute to the overall smooth running of the mission, and the collective effort of the team in post. 

Language requirements:  

Language:  English, Guajarati and Hindi.   

Level of language required:  The job holder should be fluent in English.  They should be able to function at a high level in Guajarati and/or Hindi. 

Essential on arrival:  some experience as a political analyst or researcher, either at a higher (ie Masters) level in a university, or in an organisation that has international links like an NGO or large business.   

Desirable:  previous experience in writing succinct, readable political analysis.  Experience in working in a small team where they have shown flexibility and adaptability to contribute to team goals.

SALARY PACKAGE 

For British High Commission (BHC) candidates, the Local Staff BHC Terms & Conditions will apply. 

For other than BHC candidates, salary will be INR 94,405 per month together with a 12% provident fund and 6% superannuation fund/Special Allowance. 

Additionally the BHC offers a great benefits package that includes annual domiciliary medical cover, plus a Group Hospitalisation Scheme with INR 500,000 floater cover for your immediate family. 

No relocation or any other related costs or assistance will be provided. Notional tax will be deducted if you are not liable to pay local tax.
