Public Diplomacy

Act as deputy to the Olympic and Paralympic Attache, including leading the team while the Olympic Attache is on Language training between late 2017 and mid-2018.  Lead on internal coordination of all Embassy teams working on preparations for the Olympics, Paralympics and Rugby World Cup.  Lead on interface with London stakeholders including Foreign Office, Department Of Culture Media and Sport and Department for International Trade, as well as sports organisations including British Olympic Association and British Paralympic Association.

Support Team GB and Paralympics GB in achieving medal targets by providing them with strategic advice on how to achieve marginal gains through the best possible accommodation, logistical and transport solutions in the run up to and during Tokyo 2020.

 

 

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?: 

Project management.  Use a project management approach to coordinate among teams and sections working on major sporting events to ensure work remains on track and risks are managed.  Establish and maintain interface with London departments.  Develop agendas and take forward actions from senior governance board once established, ensuring that teams across embassy and in London respond effectively to senior directions.

 

Deputy to Olympic and Paralympic Attache.  Assist attaché in providing support to Team GB and Paralympics GB.  Build and maintain a network of stakeholders in Japan among government, local governments, organising committees and sports organisation.  Use network to gather information on organisational arrangements for the events and the plans of other national teams and sponsors.  Use contacts to influence outcomes for British teams and provide advice to British Teams and senior officials and ministers to enable them to do the same at a senior level.

 

Play a leading role for the Embassy in early preparations and planning for British House.  Work with DIT Live Marketing team to work up options for British House for Ministers to make decisions on.  Support DIT recce visits and develop local knowledge of venues and organising committee intentions to feed into DIT’s planning.

  • Proven experience in project/ programme management
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Prior experience of leading and managing teams
  • Native speaker/ fluent level Japanese (N1 - Japanese Proficiency Test level).
  • Fluent English with TOEIC score of 800 points or above.

Benefits package includes: 

  • This position can either be based in the British Embassy Tokyo or in the British Consulate-General Osaka.
  • This is a fixed-term role for three (3) years.
  • Working hours: Full time.
  • Salary: 616,000 yen (note: Salary may be reduced due to tax status)
