The British Embassy in Vienna is looking for a Political Attaché – Trade Policy & Economics to join its Department for International Trade team. The successful applicant will strengthen our trade policy capability, undertaking research to identify and collate evidence of market barriers and to provide economic and policy analysis of trade policy issues.

The job-holder will work to the Country Director, and alongside other members of the Trade & Investment and Political teams. Successful performance would see them adding value in reporting and analysis, strengthening the team’s ability to engage in depth with the business community and Austrian Government officials on trade through policy expertise. The job-holder will also need to be flexible, taking up a range of foreseen and unforeseen tasks.

Roles and responsibilities:

Monitor trade and trade-related policy issues, undertake research and analyse market barriers;

Collate and report on emerging trade barriers, providing economic and policy analysis on key industry sectors to feed into local and central (Whitehall) strategies to address wider regulatory and trade policy issues (e.g. at EU level);

Leverage influence with stakeholders across the business community and government and engage on identified priorities;

Develop and project manage plans to address local market barriers, supporting relevant colleagues to deliver these;

Support colleagues holding relationships with stakeholders across government and industry to raise trade policy and market access issues;

Represent the Embassy & Department at briefings, conferences and other events;



University Degree or experience in related fields (Economics, Law, Business Management);

Existing knowledge of Austrian and British political systems, policy priorities of UK and Austrian Governments;

Excellent German and English language skills (written and spoken, minimum C1 level);

Proven IT skills (Word, PowerPoint and Excel);

Good project management, including an eye for detail, to ensure that all aspects of service delivery are thought through carefully;

Customer focus: a concern for quality and drive for continuous improvement in the service provided;

Excellent communication skills to work well with external contacts and a wide and diverse Europe team within the organisation;

Drive and enthusiasm combined with the ability to deliver, working as part of a team;

Resourcefulness and ability to act on own initiative, with an ability to find creative solutions when the unexpected occurs.

Resilience and the ability to work under pressure on a challenging portfolio.

An understanding of the UK and Austrian business environments;

Experience of working in government and international corporation

Experience of working on European Affairs.

This is a local staff position in the British Embassy Vienna; it is not a diplomatic designated position. The position is subject to the terms and conditions of British Embassy employees.

This is a full-time and fixed-term position until 31 March 2021. Working hours are flexible and staff are entitled to time-off-in-lieu for extra hours worked. The annual leave entitlement is 25 days per year pro rata and the Embassy also enjoys 14 Austrian / UK public holidays per year and we are committed to ensuring a work / life balance.

The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background check and security clearance. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure they are legally able to work in Austria. The Embassy is not able to assist with any visa or sponsorship arrangements.

Monthly salary will be €3927 gross, payable 14 times a year for those liable for Austrian tax. Please note that UK nationals will receive their salary net, minus the deduction of an equivalent level of Austrian (UK) tax retained at source. Further information on this will be given to candidates during the recruitment process. All other nationals will receive paid their salary minus social insurance deductions and are expected to comply with Austrian tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the Austrian authorities.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy are subject to terms and conditions service according to Austrian employment law.

Visa / Passport requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Austria and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract. Additional requirements may become necessary pending EU Exit. If requirements change additional eligibility information will be shared during the recruitment process.
