The British Embassy Bahrain has a vacancy for Residence Steward, job grade S1.

The Residence Steward will support the Ambassador’s family such that he can maintain a focus on Embassy business. As such, the jobholder’s prime responsibilities will relate to the family and the family space on the second floor of the Residence.

You will also help with the cleaning and laundry for the formal space on the first floor – the Chief Steward’s primary responsibility – and you may be asked to help, when excused from family support, with formal events (albeit the normal presumption is that you will need to provide childcare). 

 

Duties and responsibilities:

- Childcare

  • Provide a safe and supportive care for the Ambassador’s children, maintaining routine, helping with their studies and activities, and ensuring their wellbeing. You should be able to converse in and read English.
  • Keep the family space on the second floor clean and tidy, and assist with household duties.
  • Forge a trusting relationship with the family based on reliability, honesty, and professionalism.

- Cleaning and laundry

  • Clean top floor of Residence and other areas as directed by Residence Manager.
  • Dust and polish furniture. Vacuum and polish floors. Clean bathrooms.
  • Prepare guest bedrooms and bathrooms as required.
  • Wash and iron (as necessary) laundry, following washing instructions and any specific instructions from Residence Manager.
  • Keep linen cupboards tidy and ensure that table linen is ready for Residence functions.

- Serving and waiting: When available from Ambassador’s family duties, you might be asked to:

  • Serve and wait at tables, under guidance from Chief Steward and Chef.
  • Serve drinks and canapés at receptions.
  • Assist Chief Steward in preparing for and clearing up after events.
  • Help manage extra staff at events.

- Carry out other reasonable tasks, such as such as providing additional support to Chief Steward, Chef, and Residence Manager as required to ensure smooth running of the Residence and to cover the duties of the Chief Steward in their absence.

The above list is not exhaustive and the jobholder will be required to be flexible and take on other ad hoc tasks as required.

  • Team player who is also capable of working on their own initiative.
  • Experience of maintaining a representational space.
  • Basic food hygiene/ handling and silver service.
  • Knowledge of first aid.

The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role. The salary for this role is at BHD 418.050 per month based on 35 hours per week (specific hours to be confirmed at a later time). The jobholder will be required to be flexible in their approach to hours worked as these are subject to adjustment and may at times be fluid dependant on needs of the Ambassador and their family.

Any hours worked over the contracted 35 per week can be claimed back as time off in lieu (TOIL). There may be requirement for some hours to be transferred from during week to weekends on occasion, and the jobholder will be expected to be flexible.

This role is for a full-time employment on a permanent contract basis. The successful candidate will be subject to a three-month probationary period. The appointment is subject to satisfactory local and UK security clearances.

If you are exempt from paying local social insurance in Bahrain, your salary will be abated by an amount equivalent to the social insurance that would otherwise be payable. Further information on this may be provided at interview if necessary.

No accommodation nor relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.

The package includes private medical insurance and learning and development (L&D) opportunities. Specific training and mentoring for the role will be provided, and your Line Manager will help you develop a personalised L&D plan and will share opportunities, resources and guidance to ensure you continue your learning.
