Main purpose of job:

To plan and deliver first class visit programmes for the High Commission and incoming visitors including British ministers and senior officials.  Support the effective delivery of the High Commission’s political objectives in Sri Lanka.

Roles and responsibilities:

Deliver first class visit programmes for the High Commission (60 % of the role). 

Planning and organising visits within Sri Lanka for High Commission staff (including the High Commissioner), visiting British Ministers and senior officials; ensuring visit programmes support UK objectives in Sri Lanka.  You will also provide advice on meetings with Sri Lankan politicians, officials and other contacts, and on media opportunities.  You will be responsible for the High Commission’s visit budget.

Provide support to wider Political Team work(25% of the role).

You will also provide logistics, administration and other support to the Political Team, including research tasks, attending meetings, managing the budget for information services, maintaining the contacts database and arranging meetings.  You will be expected to develop a network of working level contacts with other Diplomatic Missions, Government officials and civil society.

You will also provide leave cover for the Personal Assistant to the High Commissioner and Deputy High Commissioner.

Maintaining the High Commission’s Crisis Management Plan (15% of the role).

Working directly to the Deputy High Commissioner, you will be responsible for ensuring that the Crisis Management Plan is up-to-date, that staff are aware of their responsibilities and have the skills and resources needed in the event of a crisis affecting British Nationals in Sri Lanka or Maldives.  You will be the Secretary to the Crisis Committee at the High Commission.

Resources managed:

Oversight of travel and entertainment budgets of £30,000.

Language requirements:

Language: English, Sinhala

Level of language required: Excellent spoken and written English, good spoken Sinhala.

Learning and development opportunities:

The British High Commission offers a range of learning and development opportunities – on the job training, e-learning, job shadowing, and could include visits to Delhi and London for more substantial training courses.  This could include opportunities to develop foreign policy skills, communications, human rights, and crisis training.

There is also the opportunity to be involved with the wider work of the High Commission.

Working patterns:

Occasional out of hours work will be required to cover receptions or visits, for which time off in lieu will be given.

Excellent problem solving skills, strong organisational and interpersonal skills, personal drive and ability to work both independently and as part of a team, flexibility and resilience under pressure.

Tamil language would be a real advantage, as would experience of working in an international context.
