Main purpose of job:

This is an exciting and demanding position for an exceptional individual to take up the role of Market Access Coordinator under the Department for International Trade (DIT), at the British Embassy in Colombia.

Working closely with colleagues across DIT and other Embassy sections, you will play a key role in identifying market access barriers for British companies across all sectors and working with the sectorial officers in order to design strategies to address them, improving access to the Colombian market for UK companies. You will also have a key role in co-ordinating and following up on trade dialogues and trade policy discussions between the UK and Colombia.

The successful applicant will also be expected to work closely with key external stakeholders from both the public and private sectors.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

Market Access (65%)

  • Develop a deep and rigorous understanding of market access barriers affecting UK-Colombia trade by working with the DIT team and wider economic teams across the British Embassy in Colombia and in London, drawing on qualitative and quantitative data to identify issues in priority/high growth sectors
  • Monitor those market access barriers and assess their functional impact in priority/high growth sectors
  • Develop and implement an action plan to tackle the identified market access barriers on all sectors, through ongoing activities, lobbying and high-level interventions: coordinate key engagements with relevant stakeholders and establish commitments and actions, which result in long-term solutions, influencing foreign trade in terms of transparency and inclusivity
  • Provide evidence-based policy recommendations to senior management in DIT and the wider Embassy

Reporting and Knowledge Transfer (20%)

  • Lead on briefings, presentations and other reporting/analysis in the area of market access
  • Support the development of market access capacity within the DIT and wider Embassy teams, delivering training or information sessions as required

Budget Management and Administration (15%)

  • Manage DIT financial resources, which includes monitoring budget allocated to projects and ensuring that all delegated funds are spent by the relevant deadlines
  • Manage personal administrative tasks, such as activity and expense recording
  • Play an active part in corporate life at the Embassy to maximise the overall well-being of staff, and to contribute positively to the Embassy’s working environment

Perform other reasonable tasks as requested by the Director or Deputy Director of DIT Colombia.

Resources managed (staff and expenditure):

Might be required to manage regional and/or local budget for successful delivery of responsibilities.

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent) in Public Policy, Economics, International Relations, International Business or related subjects
  • Two or more years’ professional experience
  • Relevant work experience in trade policy, economic analysis, regulation or related fields
  • Knowledge of Colombia’s trade and market access policy and institutional framework
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal, communication and relationship management skills
  • Evidence of delivering positive results through collaboration and networks
  • High level/working level English and Spanish (At least C1 level under CEFR) 
  • Evidence of effective decision-making
  • Experience of both the UK and Colombian business environments and cultures
  • Knowledge of UK policy and business landscape
  • Experience of project or programme management
  • Proficient user of MS Office

Role is full-time, fixed-term. Contract is for 12 months from start date. 

Must have the legal status to live and work in Colombia.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.

Currently, work is remote. Once normal operations resume, jobholder will be expected to go into the Embassy.
