Main purpose of job:

The Residence is both the home to the Ambassador’s family and a busy, official venue hosting around 10 events a week from business meetings to receptions for hundreds of guests. We are looking for a “steward” to be the front of house for the official events, to prepare for these events including through stock control and generally maintain a high standard in every aspect of Residence life.

This position requires a highly motivated and capable professional with excellent organisational and communication skills and a passion for front of house hospitality. Equally important is the work behind the scenes including controlling drinks stocks, maintaining the terrace and outdoor space to a high standard and working with the Embassy estates team to ensure high standards in the building and equipment.

This position involves managing a team of servers for larger events, and some evening, early morning and weekend work. The S2 Steward does not look after the Ambassador’s family but is a member of the wider Embassy team.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Creating a high quality, professional and welcoming venue for official functions by:

  • Setting up area for official functions, liaising with the Ambassador and Residence Manager on placement and logistics (15%)

  • Steward service for official functions and visitors (welcoming visitors, serving food and drinks) (15%)

  • Effective hiring and management of extra staff for larger events at the residence, including providing induction and guidance to external waiting staff for big functions, agreeing numbers with Residence Manager. Set up and break down of service areas for all special functions (buffet, barbecue, etc. (10%)

  • Close team work with Residence chef, helping in kitchen when required (10%).

  • Keeping records of all alcohol, wines and drinks used at events (10%).

Ensuring that the Residence is equipped and ready for events by anticipating needs: (20%)

  • Keeping pantry, drinks refrigerator and cupboards well stocked at all times and maintain sufficient supplies of other household items, including caring for china and stock keeping silver, cutlery and glassware and conducting regular drinks stock valuation.

  • Maintaining inventories of all cutlery and crockery, ordering replacements  

Keeping high standards at Residence: (20%)

  • Liaising with Estates team on repairs

  • Undertake daily general upkeep and cleanliness of the residential entertainment areas

  • Weekly cleaning of the swimming pool area and furniture

  • Cleaning of basement, ground floor windows and doors.

  • Experience of working in a large residence or hotel in a customer-facing role.     

  • Experience and knowledge of silver service (serveur).

  • Detailed knowledge of food, wines and beverages from around the world, including the UK.

  • Good knowledge of Health & Safety norms. Further training on this will be provided.

  • Experience of working in a multi-cultural environment.

  • Ability to read English to intermediate level
  •   Knowledge and experience in Food and wine pairing.
