The successful candidate will join a virtual China network team coordinating the UK’s participation in the Beijing International Expo 2019, which will provide a framework for a number of activities for the British Government and wider network from April to October 2019.

The postholder will be part of the Department for International Trade team in the British Embassy in Beijing. China is the largest DIT overseas network in the world. It is a fast-paced place to work at the heart of UK / China Government relations with ambitious trade and investment strategic goals. This post is based in the agriculture, food and drink team. This is an exciting area of work for the Embassy as the prominance of this topic is growing raipdly in opportunity and profile, with many links across the British network and with our goals featuring significantly in a number of high level Ministerial visits and dialogues.

The Beijing International Expo is taking place from April to October 2019. The expo will cover themes such as agriculture and horticulture, education, science, green cities, sustainable living, climate change and broader environmental topics. The UK is a participating country in the expo and has world leading expertise in the key topic areas which we aim to showcase at this event.

The postholder will work alongside the Agriculture, Food and Drink Counsellor and the Beijing International Expo Coordinator in Beijing to support the UK team in London who lead the Expo preparations, to coordinate involvement from across the British network and liaise with Expo organisers in Beijing.

The jobholder will play a pivitol role in building and maintaining relationships with departments across the Embassy and the wider UK network in China and helping to develop a six month long programme of events that will run through the duration of the Expo and meet the UK governments objectives in China.  

The postholder, under the direction of the Beijing International Expo coordinator in the Embassy, will be able to make their own decisions about how best to engage stakeholders and prepare for the event in the run up to 31 March 2019. They will be responsible for coordinating preparations for the UK area expo site and work with the coordinator to prepare the six month long programme of activities that the UK will engage in during the course of the expo.They will engage across the whole of the British Government network in China, including working with external partners including the British Council, Britcham, the China Britian Business Council and UK businesses.

 

Roles and responsibilities:

Lead in the organisation of the Embassy’s work to prepare for the Expo. To liaise with the internal and external contacts with an interest in the UK’s participation in the Expo and ensure that they are regularly updated and engaged in decision making and preparations.

Prepare the briefings and presentation material including key government documents and business cases that the team use to communicate progress with the expo and to engage external organisations in supporting UK participation.

Liaise with the organisers of the Expo in Beijing, working with the British design team to finalise the UK design of the UK’s area at the Expo and liaising with the Expo site to get it constructued, dealing with any problems as they arise. Provide remote support to the designers during the times that they are unable to visit.

Work with the Expo coordinator in the Embassy to create a programme of UK participation throughout the duration of the Expo.

Support the Expo coordinator in negotiating team bids to Government funding sources, and in ongoing liaison with businesses about private sponsorship for the UK’s involvement in the Expo, attending and leading on meetings.

Maintaining a virtural team within China involving those with an interest in the Expo. Directly communicating with senior leaders in the Embassy inlcluding HMA, DHM, HMTC reporting on Expo progress and encouraging support from DIT and FCO.

Ensure that the team in Beijing maintain ongoing effective communication and meetings with the Expo coordinators in London, including daily liaison with commercial teams, procurement teams, marketing and the GREAT campaign team.

Working with internal and external comms teams to promote the Expo and the UK’s involvement.

  • Strong organisational ability
  • Familiarity with building relationships and networks of contacts
  • Project management skills would also be advantageous
  • Mandarin would be useful but not necessary

This position is advertised on fixed term contract until 31 March 2019 but exploring possibility of extension.

We offer a competitive package, which includes basic salary, good leave entitlement, and insurance plan, etc. The gross salary (before all deductions) is CNY 17, 670/ month for Chinese Nationals and an abated salary of CNY 24, 529/ month for British Nationals and spouses/ partners (all nationalities) of diplomats who are ‘W’ (diplomatic) visa holders and meet passport criteria.

We also offer excellent development opportunities and a 22-day annual leave entitlement in pro rata.

Conditioned working hours is 35 hours/ week from Monday to Friday and flexible working can be arranged upon personal needs.
