Commercial Diplomacy

The British Consulate-General in Miami is seeking a highly motivated Vice Consul for prosperity, to lead on trade policy, energy, climate change and the knowledge economy to further UK interests in Florida, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. The jobholder will work closely with the Consul General, the Miami political and public diplomacy team as well as the Atlanta-based Science and Innovation Officer to develop opportunities for UK-US economic growth, innovation and entrepreneurship.

The British Consulate-General Miami is the UK’s diplomatic representation in Florida, Puerto Rico and the USVI. It is responsible for developing trade and investment relations; political reporting; engaging on economic policy objectives of interest to the UK; public diplomacy; and Consular services for British nationals. 

  • Lead on trade policy initiatives, including activities and outreach to promote transatlantic free trade between the UK and USA.
  • Manage Miami’s prosperity programme including working closely with Department for International Trade on the delivery of a resilient infrastructure programme for Puerto Rico and Tennessee and an energy/cyber security road-show with Consulates in Atlanta and Boston
  • Working closely with the Atlanta-based Science and Innovation officer, identify areas of high potential for UK-US partnerships in sectors such as: Space; oceans; financial tech and cyber; and life sciences.
  • Lead on energy and climate change initiatives; support US emission reduction policies and targets using UK expertise; build a network of advocates to help build long term support for climate action across State Governments, the business community and civil society.
  • Support wider UK prosperity goals through collaboration with UK Trade and Investment and Science and Innovation teams helping to identify speaking and engagement opportunities to underline UK economic and innovation excellence.
  • Partner with Economy and Financial services Team to monitor Brexit and provide credible reassurance to those with business links to the UK.
  • Identify and lead on visit programmes for senior officials that can promote economic policy objectives, preparing logistics and aiding with written briefings.

No staff management, though potential for management of an intern.



Language: Fluent in English. Verbal and written.  

  • Bachelors’ degree minimum;
  • A minimum of 3-5 years relevant work experience
  • Demonstrated interest in economic matters across the Southeast region;
  • A demonstrable interest in the UK’s economic priorities, and ability to credibly represent the UK in the region;
  • Strong networking skills and ability to capably discuss economics, trade and energy with external clients;
  • Strong oral/written communication skills;
  • Strong research skills;
  • Attention to detail and ability to draft, edit and proofread;
  • Ability to follow through on assigned tasks with limited supervision;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite
  • Positive and flexible attitude, including willingness to travel in the Southeast and occasionally to Washington or London
