Main purpose of job: 

A vacancy has arisen for an Immigration Liaison Assistant in the Home Office International Operations team (formerly Immigration Enforcement International (IEI)), at the British High Commission New Delhi. 

HOIO works with UK and international law enforcement partners to tackle immigration crime, primarily by:

  • Identifying and mitigating threats to the UK Border,
  • Preventing inadequately documented passengers travelling to the UK
  • Supporting and enhancing visa decision quality
  • Identifying, disrupting and mitigating visa abuse
  • Developing criminal investigations against individuals and organisations which cause harm to the UK.

The main purpose of this Immigration Liaison Assistant (ILA) role is to provide administrative support to the HOIO team.  The successful candidate will process information received by the team which includes completing and extracting data from spreadsheets, for which competency in Excel is required.  The jobholder will also be required to create local alerts, so access to and familiarity with PROVISO is essential. 

The successful candidate will need good organisational and time management skills, as this is a fast-paced role with frequent tight deadlines; have the ability to multi-task; possess a proactive approach to problem solving and have relevant practical IT skills to be able to provide operational and administrative support to colleagues.  Good written skills are also essential as the role involves responding to email enquiries from both internal and external partners. 

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve: 

Handling official data and information received from the public and partners:

  • Inputting data received on to spreadsheets and systems;
  • Helping to prepare weekly and monthly statistical returns.
  • Conducting checks and research on government systems, providing the outcome of these in a clear and concise format to colleagues, team managers and partner organisations
  • Assisting to develop, research and support immigration crime investigations 
  • Undertaking verification checks, compliance checks and research as required.  This will involve use of computerised systems and telephone calls to a variety of organisations;
  • Supporting the development of evidence - based intelligence to support visa officers in their decision-making and the HOIO team in relation to operational activity and development of investigation into immigration crime.

Offering administrative support

  • To fully support all HOIO administrative functions as well as providing logistical support to the Immigration Liaison Officers and Managers.

 Partner Engagement:

  • Engaging with partners, within the High Commission, the Indian Authorities and UK-based teams;
  • Attending meetings with partners;
  • Supporting operational field trips to other regions, for which travel and overnight stays may be occasionally required. 

What we require from you:

  • A working knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Excel (Advanced Excel knowledge is desirable) e.g. use and application of pivot tables;
  • Effective and confident oral and written communication skills in English;
  • A polite and confident telephone manner;
  • The ability to prioritise and deliver work effectively under pressure, often to tight timescales;
  • A flexible approach to work allocation;
  • The willingness to work towards an intelligence profession accreditation

Language requirements: 

Languages: English and Hindi 

Level of language required: Fluent (Oral and Written)

Learning and development opportunities (and any specific training courses to be completed): 

The majority of training will be completed via on the job training which will include e-learning, shadowing and mentoring.

The successful candidate will be able to participate in training events which are open to British High Commission staff members and therefore they will have personal development opportunities.

Home Office International Operations expects staff to achieve a professional intelligence practitioner accreditation (IPP) which is recognised across all UK law enforcement agencies.  Once the successful candidate is familiar with the role and is performing to agreed standards they will have the opportunity to work towards achieving this accreditation. 

Essential on arrival:  

Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.

Fluency in written and spoken Hindi

Fluency in written and spoken English.

Strong organisational and time management skills.

An ability to work under pressure.

Excellent IT skills (MS Office), particularly Excel.

Desirable:  

Previous immigration, visa or law enforcement experience would be an advantage

For other than BHC candidates, Basic Salary will be INR 47, 354 per month together with a 12% provident fund and 6% Superannuation Fund

No relocation or any other related costs or assistance will be provided.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
