Main purpose of job:

This role is a chance to shape the UK’s economic relationship with Japan at a crucial point in our history. The Senior Financial Services Advisor will play a leading role in improving market access in financial services by engaging with business organisations in Japan and the UK. The jobholder will build and manage relationships with business organisations, working closely with the Head of Economic & Finance Team, Trade Counsellor and Minister Counsellor Economic Affairs to lobby on priority market access issues and develop regulatory cooperation with Japan. The jobholder will also manage one other member of staff working on trade policy in the financial services sector.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

(40%) Lead on Financial Services policy and business engagement with Japan, ensuring the UK-Japan Financial Dialogue and MOU between the City of London Corporation and Tokyo Metropolitan Government delivers commercial benefits for the UK. Play a leading role in the cross-Embassy Financial Services virtual team to ensure policy and commercial objectives are aligned, supported by the Senior Economic Advisor. 

(35%) Market Access and Development & Supporting Commercial Outcomes. Working closely with the Embassy’s Trade Counsellor on market access issues.  Account management of major Japanese (e.g mega banks) and UK financial services players supporting commercial outcomes and contributing to trade and investment targets.  Building relationships with financial services firms, relevant public bodies and trade associations and coordinating the Embassy’s Financial Services Group meeting with British finanancial services firms.  Helping to shape HMG’s approach to cooperation with Japan on financial services market development, through the annual Financial Forum, ensuring that business views are taken into account. 

(20%) Research, analysis and reporting on business environment issues to underpin engagement with Japanese authorities and business associations on issues of importance to UK business.  To follow developments in UK policy of interest to Japanese investors and act as a source of expertise to colleagues in Japan for example on supply chains and economic security issues.

(5%) Corporate and crisis preparedness.  As with all roles in the Embassy, the jobholder will be responsible for elements of corporate work and our crisis response effort.

Working patterns:

All staff are required to take a role in the embassy’s crisis preparation and response. Full training will be provided for this and regular opportunities will be available to test and develop your skills.


  • Language requirements: 

     - Language:  English, Japanese

     - Level of language required:  English (business level spoken and written), Japanese (fluent spoken and written).

  • Experience of engagement with the financial services sector – ideally both Japan and UK
  • Experience of working with financial institutions
  • Understanding of fundamentals of how the financial services sector works.
  • Business level English (IELTS band 7 or TOEIC 800 points or above or equivalent)
  • Experience working with the UK or other Government
  • Experience in a sales environment
  • Business level Japanese (JLPT N2 or equivalent)
