Main purpose of job:


You will be responsible for the delivery of high quality economic analysis. This will involve building a strong network of high quality contacts, taking responsibility on high impact visitor programmes and the line management of the team Economic Officer. You will need to be highly attuned to current economic developments, have a strong grasp of economic theory, and excellent interpersonal skills. You must be comfortable delivering at pace and taking responsibility. Lastly, and by no means least, you will be able to independently undertake long term research projects with high quality English language outputs.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  1. Deliver high quality economic analysis in line with the overall priorities of the China network. Contribute to short, quick reactive pieces, longer term in depth analysis and data briefings on recent economic situation in east China. 
  2. Stay on top of recent economic news and local policy announcements. Spot interesting developments and follow up in reporting. Work closely with political colleagues to understand the interplay between politics and economics.
  3. Maintain and expand a large and high quality network of contacts through academic and think tanks, local government agencies, UK and Chinese business, and other thought leaders.
  4. Play a crucial role, often leading, programme delivery of key economic visitors. These could be ministerial visits or government colleagues. Ensure visits are used to maximum benefit – advancing our understanding on particular policy areas, enhancing relationships with key external partners and helping to create commercial opportunities.
  5. Line manage the Economic Officer, looking for opportunities to help them develop their own career and play a stronger role in the economic network. Lead by example through grasping development opportunities.
  6. Support bilateral projects – these could be short, mini projects or extended over several months. Work closely with the team project officer to ensure effective delivery of economic team projects.

  • Bachelor’s degree or above in economics or a related discipline
  • At least two years of work experience working on the Chinese economy
  • Excellent written and spoken English and Chinese languages
  • Experience in delivering high quality economic analysis
  • Able to build a strong network of high quality contacts
  • Master’s degree in economics or a related discipline
  • Experience working with the Chinese government system

  • Gross monthly salary (before all deductions) of CNY 19,096 for Chinese Nationals paid in 13 month instalments and an abated monthly salary of CNY 26,443 per month for British Nationals and spouses/partners (all nationalities) of diplomats who are ‘W’ (diplomatic) visa holders and meet passport criteria;

The Mission encourages a blended learning culture based on the 70/20/10 model which includes e-learning, mentoring, coaching, other development activities and role-specific required trainings. For this role, the learning and development opportunities would be Community Liaison Officer training course, plus opportunity for job-shadowing a counterpart in China. FCDO also provides good learning and development opportunities for staff.

Conditioned working hours is 35 hours per week from Monday to Friday and flexible working can be arranged upon personal needs. 

Employment offers are subject to successful clearance of pre-employment and security checks. Staff who are locally recruited by the British Embassy are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Chinese employment law.
