The British Embassy in Athens is part of a worldwide network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is looking to recruit a full time Political Officer – Northern Greece to join the team. The position will be based in Athens but with the opportunity for fully remote working in Thessaloniki.  Applications from those resident in Thessaloniki are also welcome.

The successful candidate will be working with the Political team. You will work with Political Counsellor and Political Officer-Athens to enhance UK presence in Thessaloniki and Northern Greece, leading political engagement and reporting for Northern Greece. You will provide advice and analysis on domestic and foreign policy issues affecting the region, including Greece- Western Balkans policy and relations.  You will bring strong communication and representational skills to promote the UK in northern Greece, developing a network of contacts to feed into wider understanding of the Greek political landscape. You will be a self-starter, and someone who is able to spot opportunities to add value, working closely with British Council on visits by the Ambassador and other delegations, and working with the British Embassy Athens Communications team to maximise public diplomacy opportunities.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Political Reporting: Lead on analysis and advice on political developments in northern Greece, including W. Balkans and related issues, working closely with Political Team and Ambassador in Athens;
  • Representation: Working closely with Honorary Consul and British Council, enhance UK presence in Thessaloniki, through developing relations and networks with Stakeholders across business, academia and regional and local government;

  • Public Diplomacy and Profile: Lead on northern Greece visits and programme of activities to increase profile and carry out public diplomacy activities in line with British Embassy Athens priorities.


  • Degree in Politics, International Relations, Business or related areas;

  • 5 years of relevant work experience, preferably in Government and Policy work or related areas;

  • Solid Knowledge of Government work;
  • Fluent in English and Greek (oral and written);

  • Ability to work as member of a team as well as to work independently;

  • Ability to establish a network of contacts;

  • Ability to produce good quality written work through independent research, as well as the ability to produce reports;

  • Flexibility in adapting to changing priorities and business needs and capacity to manage own work.


  • Applicants who have experience in both government and the private sector are particularly encouraged to apply.
  • Had previoulsy worked in the UK and/ or in an international organization would be desirable.

This is a 12 months fixed-term full-time position (37.5 hours per week).  

The British Embassy offers a competitive remuneration package, 24 days annual leave entitlement (given pro-rata to staff on fixed-term contracts), a training package and flexible working opportunities. Monthly salary for this position is EUR €3,243.57, currently payable 14 times a year (as per Greek labour law). An individual personal development plan will be agreed with the successful candidate.
